Anyone put p-90s into a strat and then do The Shielding The Beast mod? I mean actual p-90s, not humbucker size or anything else. I was wondering because I thought p-90s screwed into the body. Therefore if the screws are touching the sheilding would there be any problems? Thanks guys.

See: guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=1134039194Good question on the screwing in the body question. Not sure what those in body mounting screws touch in the coil, just the base or also the guts. You could try it both ways, one insulating the screw from contact with the shielding and one touching it. Unless your bod is a hardbody you will have issues on mounting. Of course shielding the single coils will help. I have an old 1950s guit with dog-ear p90s that hums like a girlfriend I used to know when she was being treated properly. So it could definitely use the shielding, but it is an archtop and I can't figure out how to do it without cutting out the back, and that is not going to happen.

Thanks for the link Runewalker. I was thinking exactly the same thing: What does the screw touch inside the pup? I currently don't have a guitar with this setup, but I was considering new builds the other day and this came up. Thanks again. As far as my opinion on p-90s, my buddy has an Eastwood Stormbird with the stock p-90s. I really like how they sound and their response. I haven't gotten a chance to play them at high volume but he says they squeal like a pig.

I'm a newbie here and was just browsing around when I found this old thread about P90's. Someone was asking about a Stratocaster with P90's in it. Well, I'm lucky enough to have one! This is the "Jukejoint Stratocaster" and was custom built by guitargai. (He imports Ex Trad guitars from Japan.) He used hand-wound Wolftone pickups and a 4-way Telecaster switch. The guitar sounds great.

Wow, what a thread. I had always been a humbucker guy, and somehow ended up with the P90 bug. I bought a LP Special off of Ebay, and took out the P100's and put in a new set of Gibson Vintage P90's. I had a few questions last April on this forum about wiring and shielding and such, with great responses.
The guitar sounds great, and about a month after I got the pups in it, I found some reasonably priced Bumble Bee capacitors to replace the orange drops it had in it, and now it really screams.
Right now I'm trying to find one of the SE single cut Korean made PRS's with the P90's in it. I'm thinking the TV Jones P90 replacements might sound good in one of those.

I have a PRS Soapbar SE. It ain't bad, especially thru a small tube amp like the Epi Valve Junior.
Of course, I'm in the process of modifying it for a middle P-90 (the bridge one will be moved there) and will put a DiMarzio DLX Plus into the bridge. The neck P-90 is ok, but the bridge is somewhat lacking.
If'n ya like them there Gib$on P-90s, the GC near me is selling a new Gib$on faded LP double-cut for $550. These get great reviews on HC.
Of course, the PRS SE can be had for under $400 new.....

Thanks Chris. Yes, the PRS SE's are only $400, but I can't seem to find a single cut/P90 on Ebay right now. A few months ago, when I was spending my money elsewhere, they were plentiful. Surely one will pop up soon..........

Well, you know, many pickup makers make P-90s in a traditional humbucker size.....

I got my first P-90 equipped guitar a little over a week ago. Its a Fender Aerodyne Telecaster with the P-90 in the neck and a SC bridge pickup. I ordered a Lil Puncher HB from GuitarFetish last week to put in the bridge. Hopefully it will alleviate some of the overly bright highs of the stock PU.
This is my first experience with Fender, Telecaster, and P-90s. I really like the feel and weight of the guitar. A quality built instrument from Japan. I don't think I would like a standard Tele after playing this one. It has a carved top and carved belly cut that fits very nicely.
The P-90 is a little dark but it still has a good sound to my ears. I have never read a satisfying description of how one sounds and now I can understand why. I am still tweaking my amplification devices to get the sound I like most but it is still a fun process.

I forgot this was the thread where the idea for a recent build were further articulated. See: guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=11699700923 growly P90s, give that strat the cohones it has been looking for since teh 50's. And there is quack. With the wiring the series options notch it into serious harmonics. Clean to B|tchy, very versatile, from Dick Dale, to JHendrix, to EVH and more. Also gets a very cool fat jazz box sound, ala Joe Pass/Kenny Burrell. Yes, of course, I play like all those guys.

Ceramic P90's just don't do it for me. They loose the smooth sweetness that the Alnico II exibits. I find them harsh sounding to my ears. In fact, I like very few ceramic magnet pickups. One being the GFS Nashville.

Sorry I'm late getting to this thread. Did someone say 3 P-90's?
