This is the signature humbucking pickup of guitar virtuoso Steve Vai. I purchased this pickup to install in the bridge position on one of my guitars. It wound up sounding nothing like I expected it to. It had a very smooth and bassy tone to it with hardly any bite at all. I was very displeased with it and decided to try it in the neck position instead. In this position, I found it to be an incredible sounding pickup. It has very nice tight punchy bass response and shimmering crystalline highs for clean tones and an ultra smooth, clearly defined character for leads. If you're looking for scorching metal crunch, this is definitely not the right pickup for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for warm buttery leads and crystal clear clean tones, this is your ticket.

I tried an Evolution bridge model. I didn't like it. It had that "icepick to the ear" sound that he (Vai) has used to describe another DiMarzio, the X2N.
