Following UnklMickey's suggested method for checking pickup resistance with the pups in the guitar, I got the following readings from my Johnson JS-050: - Neck - 7.77
- N+M - 3.94
- Middle - 7.75
- M+B - 3.91
- Bridge - 7.64
Are these kinda on the hot side, or should I try it again sometime with a meter other than the $2.98 eBay Special I just acquired? As far as I know, this JS-050 is all stock, and I read recently that at least some of these had EMG pups in 'em. Coming soon: "Extrapolating the readings from all nine possible switch positions on my Jay Turser Hawk12," or "More Fun With Multimeters." -- Doug C.

Yes, they look reasonable relative to each other {N+M or M+B = {about} (N+M/2) or (M+B/2)] because they are wired in parallel. If in Series reading would be the would be the sum or the two pups measures.
Hot? I have seen strats and strat clones that are vintage calibrated in the 4K 5K range, so yes, these have higer readings than those.
I have not personally tested singles in the 10K reading zone, but they are out there, and are typically described as 'hot' ... 'overwound' ... 'blistering' 'eyeball melters,' etc.
I don't know if there are measurment conventions but my readings around the net tend to describe the 3.8K - 5.5Kas 'Vintage', 5.5K - 8.5K as 'overwound' and 8.5K and above as, well you fill in the blanks.
See a lot of the 'modern' singles that are not trying to be blasters come in low end of the overwound category above.
But others here have more extensive and intimate relationships with their multimeters.
For some perspective, I just happened to test my mid '6o's LesPaul for some other correspondence and it came in at Neck: 7.30K, and Bridge: 6.65K. A little unusal to have a 'hotter' Neck, but neither lack "heat." --- but they want be confused for Dimebag's (RIP) pups either.

Hi, RW. I'm glad somebody's up at this hour, to answer my questions. Yes, they look reasonable relative to each other {N+M or M+B = {about} (N+M/2) or (M+B/2)] because they are wired in parallel. If in Series reading would be the would be the sum or the two pups measures. Okay, that's what I thought. Yeah, that's why I wanted to confirm that I was doing the measurements right. Much as I might still like to put some Fralins in it (dunno yet if my stock ones are potted, and I'm not going to mess with that process myself), the readings on these are "right up there." I think a base/bass plate under the bridge will be as much as I do with those, at least for awhile, although I might someday send them out for professional potting. A lot of those guys also own oscilloscopes and stuff. I'm just happy to be using my meter for something more than a continuity tester. ;D Thanks for the reply.
