Anyone had any experience with the Bill and Beck Strat pups. they are hum-cancelling. So are they stacked humbuckers. He designed the Fender Noiseless I think, are his the same pups? He tends to favor ceramic and castigates those who think they sound 'unmusical'. So does he use ceramics on his and how do these puppies sound, especially compared to benchmark Strat singlecoils? Careful about perusing Bill's site. He's pretty crusty, almost as crusty as some of the members here.

I don't know what impact he had on the Fender Noiseless, but I do know that he was significantly involved with the Samarium Cobalt Noiseless (SCN) Fender pickups.
I think that Bill (his last name ain't really Lawrence) achieves his unique sounds from understanding what really affects pickup tone quality in a negative way, in full concert with what is really going on, and hence meaningful, in a pickup's design. Engineering is.
While I have two Am Dlx Strats with SCN's, I've never tried his other stuff.

...Bill (his last name ain't really Lawrence)... Quite right Chris! the "REAL" Bill Lawrence -- aka -- Willi Lorenz Stich. as contrasted to his former partner: the so-called "legal" Bill Lawrence : Jzchak Wajcman

While not familiar with his strat p/u's, I've used his XL500 for years, and love it's tonality and butt kicking power of them. Can be either whisper subtle, or a screaming banshee! And darn quiet when tapped.

CK, what are you impressions of the SCNs compared to benchmark "strat sounding" alnico strat singles?

Well, the SCN's aren't as "situationally notchy" as the traditional AlNiCo pickups. That's a non-engineering term for narrower frequency response, I don't expect it to catch on. They're not as "sterile" (high fidelity) as some pickups, but folks either like or dislike them. In my 2004 50th Anniversary Strat (maple board), I like them, but I'm NOT a Strat aficionado. I'm more of a "build weird combo guitars" guy (a la a Strat swamp ash body w/ Rio Grande Twangbucker Tele bridge, lipstick middle, and SD P-90 Stack neck, with a 1 3/4" Tele maple/ebony neck). I also have a regular Am Dlx S-1 SSS w/ the SCNs (rosewood board), but a set of Rio Grande Dual Calibrated Strat pickups are going in for diversity.

Rune, I've also got a 2005 AmDlx SSS ScN's, w/S1. I like them. They're clean, but not bitingly so. Like Chris, I don't think they do the 'in-between' quack sounds as well as other pups I've tried, but they're certainly acceptable. If you run across a set for what you think is 'cheap', then take 'em and try 'em out. If you don't like 'em, then eBay will become your friend. (Or craigslist - I keep forgetting this one. ) However, if you more like me than Chris (I like the Strat sound), then you should stop horsing around and just go into hock for a set of Kinman's. www.kinman.com This guy has an awful lot of information on his site, and except where he gets a hissy fit about American marketing practices (he's an Aussie), he's spot on every time. Costly, but I'm gonna snap up a set of them. Couple of my friends have 'em, so I've heard them - my mind is made up. HTH sumgai
