I just bought a set of PRS Santana III pickups to replace the stock pickups in my PRS Custom 22,when I removed the originals I discovered that they were a 4-wire humbucker as opposed to the new Santana III's which are a 1-wire pickup,I'm also re placing the 5-way rotary selector switch with a traditional 3-way blade selector switch.I've contacted PRS and was first told by them that I could use their schematic for the PRS Hollowbody and when that didn't work, their best advice was take the guitar to a qualified repairman. Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to wire this new set up consisting of .....2 one wire humbuckers...1 master volume...1 master tone....and a 3-way selector switch.Thank you.

This is probably my number 1 gripe here at GuitaNuts. Those single wire pickups are very limited in producing much variety in tone. (Don't feel bad. In 1980, I wanted my newly-purchased Gibson SG to have a little more sound variety. Well, most SG's come installed with Gibson 1 wire epoxy-filled "brick" humbuckers that can never be converted to 4 wire - ever. If I wanted a little sound variety I would have to buy a new set of pickups for it - which I did.) Let me get this straight - the stock pickups had 4 wires, but the replacement pickups are just 1 wire? The opposite is usually true. You should wait for other GuitarNut members to post but I'd stick with the stock pickups and see the various sounds I could get out of those. Then maybe I'd buy replacement pickups but they had better be 4 wire. Others may disagree but that is my view of things. Oh and welcome to the GuitarNuts Message Board and tatoo emporium.

hey Happyguy, even if you aren't that talented at posting links, you pointed to a useful diagram. here's what Happyguy was pointing us to: Sarge, you said a 3-way blade selector, so i'm thinking tele style 3-way. but, i think using a Gibson style 3-way like Happyguy pointed you to would be easier, since you already have a round hole from a rotary. unk

Am I missing something here? I thought sgtsanders1953 was talking about 4 wire versus 1 wire humbuckers.

Sarge, He, and to the forums, where we mash up mayhem and spit out oddball tidbits of sputem thinly disguised as knowledge. So you've already bought the pickups, eh? You are in a bit of a spot now, aren't you? If you just want the basic sounds of two single-wire HB's (sorta like two single coil pups), then you need only emulate a Telecaster for the most simple wiring scheme possible. However, since you're messing with the appearance of your guitar, you might take a moment and consider the ramifications of using a blade (Strat/Tele style) switch versus a toggle (ala Gibson), or even just continuing to use the rotary. This is an ergomonic decision more than anything else..... electrically speaking, it's all the same thing, just a different physical feel to each kind of switch. If you still want/need a diagram, and there's nothing here that suits you, just holler, and one of us will stand at attention and deliver. HTH sumgai

Wolf, He is, and we are. As I take it, Sarge wants to simplify things, not maintain or even increase the complexity. You, of course, are free to try and dissuade him from that course of action. Good luck! sumgai
