I use the clean fender sound (somewhere between Albert lee and Hank Marvin) with standard USA tele & strat. I'm trying to squeeze every last ounce of tone variation from p u height adjust. Amplification is a Tech21 Sans rack set to fender twin. I fluked a great b + n 'Galveston' sound on the tele by raising the n to the max and lowering the b just to minimise scratching by the E 1st string however it disappears with a part turn of adjust. The strat is all over the place in n m b combinations although each is ok by itself. I Lowered all the pickups to reduce the output level and this seemed to clean the tone a little. The strat pups are all about 4mm off the open strings and the tele about 3mm. Anyone up on the general rules and the dark art of all this?

I have a start with vintage noiseless pups in, and i set them to the fender recommened height which is on there website and only had to adjust the bridge and middle height (Bridge up and middle down)
If there stock pups then set them to fender height and just play untill you find the right height!
