Ok, I've read through several threads & replies on noisy single coils, but I think this is a bit different. I think! Anyway, a friend got a Cort strat copy at a yard sale for around $20 bucks. He tried to do something (??) to the wiring and messed it up so it had no output. he asked me to fix it. I got out one of my books with diagrams, rewired it so it worked. (ref to page 37 of Ritchie Fliegler's "Complete guide to guitar and amp maintenance") So I am pretty sure it's wired correctly. It has the typical hum when you put the volume on 1-5. from 6 through 9 it gets louder, then right at 10 , drops off again. Also, I always thought that the hum got less when you touched the guitar stings!!?? This one gets worse!!! Any ideas?? I don't want to go the copper fabric or silver paint route. He just wanted this as a toss in the car or sit in the family room with headphones so he can "spend time with the family" but still play his guitar. Thanks in advance for any and all ideas! Andy.

If I had to hazard a guess, I would say its an issue with the volume pot itself.

Your volume pot may be shot, but it also could be ye olde not/neutral reverse (connecting hot and ground to the opposite connections at the jack), since your noise gets louder when you touch the strings. How does the actual output volume of the guitar behave when you turn up the volume?

we need to figure the wiring out before you try any shielding.

That's how me and my dad watch football together! He watches football, I practice scales and stuff, and we both drink beer! I don't do the headphones though.
I was also thinking along these lines when I almost dished out $45 for a "guitar that will replace the stack of magazines next to the toilet guitar."...man this guitar stinks! (I love bad jokes)
Anyway...
I have to agree with michaelcbell. Check your output jack, make sure the wire coming off the volume pot is going to the tip of the jack. Hell...just flip the wires anyway and see if the problem goes away.
