Thinking about using this as a bridge pup in my much-modified 72 Custom RI ;D ..the question is..because I think I'm gunna wind up with a single vol pot to cover both it and the WRHB in the neck (with individual tone pots like a Strat, and selection via a super-switch I have lying around)...can I use a 500k vol pot?? I would like to do this in deference to the WRHBRI, but am concerned that this might just work against me in some way, when applied to the S-D....given that it's rated at (from memory) about 7.8....waddya think? ( I plan to use the original fourth pot position for dreaded 13-pin Roland stuff) Look forward to hearing from anyone with experience in this.....many thanks!!

Sure, the JD Tele Bridge pickup is a bit warmer anyway (alnico II). You may have significant volume level differences between the two pickups however. If you want to preserve individual level control you can use a 500K/250K dual concentric pot for stacked volume controls, or use a 500K and a 250K individual pots and a stacked 500K/250K or 500K/500K for tone controls. www.guitarpartsresource.com/electrical_ctspots.htmI have one of these pickups and was planning on using it along with a 5-2 in my MIM Nashville Power Tele, but it unfortunately still lingers in my parts storage.

Thank you SOOO much for that...although it is a bit of a 'duh!!' ..great idea..I'll follow it up...I take it that you are basically recommending 250k for both vol AND tone for the JD as the best bet..

gumbo, Well, no Chris isn't quite saying that, he's just telling you that you can have the best of both worlds. Look at this larger image: The fact is, you can buy pots like this for little more than you'd pay for two single pots, and they can be the same value or otherwise. Ditto for the tapers! And if worst came to worst and no dual-concentric pot was available in your exact choice, then you can simply "build" one by rearranging parts and pieces from other pots. That's part of what Chris said, in so many words. The other part dealt with balancing the output level of the two pickups - he's warning us that one may be quite a bit louder than the other. Get the pups mounted and working first, then if the balance problem shows up, we can deal with it then and there. Not much sense in asking for trouble that may not appear. Or so my philosophy goes, anyhoo. Now, if you really had to have the best tone out of both pickups, then you need only remember, the higher the pot's resistance value, the more brightness you'll hear when the pot is maxed at 10. Turn it down to 9, or possibly 8, and you'll the exact same overall tonality as if you'd put in a pot of half that value. (Assuming you used the recommended log taper (aka "A"). A linear taper would mean you turn it down closer to 6 or 5 before you get the same tonality as the lower value pot.) What that means is this: for a humbucker, 500KΩ is recommended. But that's too much for a single coil, right? My response is "oh yeah?". I don't see it as too bright, but that's me. What I do see is that one can EQ the brightness out of the equation later on, if necessary, but no one can ever EQ brightness into a humbucker that started life handicapped - IOW, saddled with a 250KΩ pot. All attempts to do so end up in tears, trust me on this one. For that reason, I'd use a 500KΩ pot and be done with it. But the better world would be to use a dual-concentric pot with the "correct" values. That idea is limited only by your bank account. (And it's not too late to let me know - I haven't placed that order to DigiKey yet. ;D) HTH sumgai

OK...and thanks, SG
All unnerstood..my later, secondary question was aimed at clarifying the recommended pot value for the single-pole part of the equation (and I do understand that the jury is not out yet on that one)....from the way this is all going, I get the feeling that to go 500/500 in a dual concentric is probably a good starting point, given the tirrany of distance...maybe then buy one of those, and a couple each of 250 and 500 to play with on tone.
Since I would expect that the 'volume' end of this scenario would in practice be the more set-and-forget part of the exercise, having a concentric pot in that position would be easier for me to handle in an on-stage situation..pickup selection via the superswitch (or whatever) is the more likely change to take place "on the run"... and maybe a bit of tone flipping..
After following Chris' link, I was googling for a 50k pot to use as the remote GK volume, and found that Guitar Nucleus was also able to supply the concentric pot and knob setup, and slightly cheaper than GPR...any thoughts on dealing with these people? I have no prior knowledge of their organisation...
...and yes, I can see a bit of Diet Wallet on the horizon..maybe it's worth a bit of shipping consolidation, particularly as another band member is this week importing a Thinline Tele with HB/HB and wants to change all the pots to 500k as well....(sigh)
Is there such a thing as Gear COMPONENT Acquisition Syndrome?
