I changed my Dimarzio ToneZone out today for the GFS Alnico Fat Pat Boutique Humbucker. Mostly because I wanted to see how they were and for the gold look. The GFS has a nice sound, I only have a smaller amp available but best I can tell so far is there seems to have a smooth crunch with this pickup. To be honest, for $26 plus shipping, I will be thinking more about GFS on the next guitar mod. I wish I could do a side by side comparison, I may try some recordings with one then switch back to the other pickup. I plan on doing the big ugly wiring mod when all the parts come in, so I may go back to the Dimarzio first... I don't know... LOL

I love having different pickups to play with! For humbuckers, I have an Epiphone SG Custom with three 10k Kent Armstrongs, one Alnico with a gold plated nickel cover (neck), one Alnico open-coil (middle), and one ceramic open-coil (bridge). I have found that the covered pickups are much smoother when overdriven too, and I'm always torn between which I should use. I think (hope!) that I've found the best happy medium for myself in that setup, but I've learnt a lot about the way a pickup can make a guitar so different on the way there! Its also true that a pickup doesn't have to be expensive to sound cool- its all subjective, I suppose, but I've got some really classy sounding tones from the kent armstrongs, and heard good things about plenty of other 'second place' brands. Have fun trying stuff out!

Fireball-
I have several guitars with GFS pups. I have a tele clone with the "hot tele" bridge pup and their vintage tele neck. I also have an Esquire clone (posted in the gallery under the black guitars) with a GFS dual rail tele pickup.
Their tele pups sound, well, just like a good tele pup should sound. Whether they sound as good as a Duncan or DiMarzio I leave to your individual ears, but for about a third of the price you can't beat them.

I'm bad about trying new things. I wanted to try a Dimarzio X2N or a EMG-81 in the guitar for a while now, but didn't want to fork out the $$$. I have a white Charvel that has a Dimarzio Super 3 and a Dimarzio PAF Pro in the neck. I like the sound of the Super 3. I also have a Fender Bullet Deluxe with a Dimarzio SDS-1 in the bridge. That pickup is powerful for a single, but don't like the hum... I love the crunch it produces. My favorite guitar before the Warmoth was a blue Charvel Model 4 (thats in pieces, was going to custom paint it, but that was put on the back burner, and the hardware got put up somewhere and is still put up... ,but don't know where... ) The model 4 has active pickups, I love the sound of the boost, if I remember correctly, the Jackson pickup was like a PAF until you roll on the boost. I have half a mind (insert joke here) to put that setup in the Warmoth until I find the pieces to the Charvel!
