the band Godsmack uses low tuning a lot (mostly cgcfad) and they write a lot of good songs. i've tried to write some songs with the cgcfad tuning but i can't get anything i do to really have that heavy metal quality that godsmack acheives. any tips on low tuned songs would be much appreciated!

Godsmack, like many of their fellows, focus on heavy grooves and simple riffs. The powerful sound they achieve has a lot to do (in the earlier work) with timing the bass drum with the guitar, and doubling up the riff on the bass guitar. One of the most used "chords" is of course the heaviest three strings barred across one fret for a perfect fifth. Memorize a minor scale from frets 0 - 12, practice your palm muting, and chug away.
