I have a Floyd II on one of my axes and I think the major diff is that you don't have to cut the ball-ends off your strings which means the bridge is non-locking. Interestingly, it still stays in tune really well and I think it's because the string isn't traveling over too much metal. But i think it's a safer bet to have a double locking system.

The idea behind cutting the ball off and locking it, is that the string windings sort of pile up on the ball, and as you wank the thing up and down, those extra windings slip a bit and the string goes flat. If you take a look at a string you can clearly see this.
WHICH IS WHY you usually have to get pre-stretched strings, which limits your string choices to... FR strings... I like my elixers, thank you very much.
Screw FR... I want an Ibanez vibrato.
