Never let it be said that the little guy has no voice in how things are run! New member rockwillreign can be blamed for the creation of this new Forum, Sound Samples. ;D
So here are the Rules, at least for now. ChrisK and I will be the only ones who can post to this Topic, so if you have questions, suggestions, or wish to debate a point, start another Topic below, please.
RULE NUMBER 1:
No debate needed for this one, it's just a fact of life: All submissions must be original works created by a Forum member. The reason is almost obvious, but I'll state it anyway - copyright. I don't wanna get into any kind of contest with anyone about laws, rights, or whatever.... not with Forum members, not with copyright holders, not withweaselslawyers, not with no one. Life's too short, and I'm already at the far end of the road, so for me, it's really too short for that kind of aggravation. Call me a hard-butt, but that's just the way it's gonna be.
Naturally, if/when you publish a sound file (creating it, and then making it available to the general public), you assume all rights and responsibilities due to any other copyright holder. Neither this Forum, acting as a communications medium and not as a content holder/provider, will assume any responsibility for the content of any sound files so published by any of its members; nor will ProBoards, the Hosting Service Provider accept any such responsibility; nor most specifically, will any member of this Forum, to include any person in an Administration capacity at any level, accept any such responsibility.
All that really means is that if you rip off Stairway To Heaven for your sample, it's likely that the Hosting Provider of your file is gonna get a 'Notice and Take-down Order'. We won't get it, we're only a link source. For further discussion of what will, or at least might be, appropriate file content, start another Topic below.
Rule Number 2:
Make your file short enough that it won't take all day to download. Yes, it has to be long enough to make the point, but it doesn't have to be a complete musical composition, a 4 meaure phrase will do nicely.
This applies not only to file size, but also the sampling rate as well as the file type. You can choose whatever rate/type you wish, but if people grow beards while waiting for your sample to download to their 'puters, don't blame us when you get responses like "dude, WTF's wrong with you?" Remember that some folks are still on dial-up, and they'd like to share in your glory too. Don't treat 'em like second-class citizens, OK?
Rule Number 3:
Grow a thick skin! If your soldering skills outshine your chops, don't expect glowing praise for your work of art. I'll clamp down on ugly, but I won't get in the way of properly expressed criticism.
Rule Number 4:
I expect that there will need to be discussion on recording techniques. To that end, the first few threads that deal with the topic may well be stickied for future reference. I ask that you consider the average wherewithall of most Nutz - we spent our money on guitars... we ain't go no money left over for multi-thousand dollar DAW stations, OK? Remember, we're here because we're willing to learn how to do things either on the cheap, or way differently from the norm. ;D
Rule Number 5:
In discussions revolving around computer software, remember that there are other platforms besides Windows on the PC. If you know your tip is not platform-neutral, please let others know too.
That's all I can think of right now, but the list may grow, as experience hones our needs.
