The non-artist's rendering for shielded strat wiring over on the original site says to make sure the pots are grounded to the foil on the guard via their shafts.
Does that mean the foil has to be actually touching the shaft or does that just mean there needs to some foil under the bolts affixing them?

I think it's just as long as some metal part of the pot is touching the foil. On mine the nut under the pickguard is touching the foil, so the pot is grounded through this. Unless you have foil actually inside the hole in the pickguard, you aren't going to get much of a direct connection to the shaft itself anyway. As long as the foil goes right up to the holes, you can be pretty much sure that the pot will be grounded.
