I've been fiddling around with electric instruments since the early 70's and this is one of the coolest mods I've ever thought up. Originally, my idea was to add an extra coil next to the existing bridge one. The only thing I regret about not going that route (no pun intended) is that I could have experimented with making an unbalanced humbucker by using a hotter PU as the fourth coil. I've heard that unbalanced coils have some tone advantages, but hum a bit more. Any way, maybe that's for someone else to check out. Another variation on what I've done might be to use this wiring scheme, which gets 13 PU combo's, while maintaining the original pickup placement.
A bit of background in case you didn't read the thread I started before I did the mod. It's a Grizzly kit with alder body, rock maple neck w/indian rosewood FB and abalone inlays. The PU's are vintage "60's" sounding with alnico 5's and about 5.6k-5.9k (RWRP). I wired it up as a 2 PU guitar with a 3 position DPDT mini-toggle for the 'slantbucker' (series, single, parallel), and a 5 position superswitch wired up per J. Atchley's 'T-riffic'. That gives a total of 13 PU combinations and no dead switch positions. 9 of those positions involve all 3 coils.
The range of sounds this guitar makes now is astounding. Some of the series sounds are my instant favorites. Hot and creamy but percussive and cutting at the same time. Just the slantbucker alone produces much more beef and grunt than I thought it would. Switching the slantbucker through it's 3 sounds while out of phase to the bridge PU gives a great tour of out of phase-ness sounds. When it's just the single the phase cancellation is thorough and sounds very hollow. But switch the slantbucker to parallel and it starts to tone down a bit. Slantbucker in series almost overpowers the neck coil, and though they're still out of phase, the sound is much subtler. People who say that PU's out of phase is not a useful sound should try this axe!

Hmm, looks like I did somethin' wrong....isn't there a way to make the pictures appear here? Yup, Before I go on though, { really means [ and } really means ], so use square brackets instead of { or }, okay? You just put a {img} before the address and a {/img} after the address Like so: Welcome aboard! Glad to have you!
