Hello. I am new here so hope this has not been answered already.
Just purchased a 4-yr old Fender Marcus Miller. The appearance is mint so I suspect is has not been abused. BUT there is a loud, 60hz buzz when plugged into my amp (Ampeg BA-112). This is not a soft, annoying buzz but loud enough that everyone leaves the room.
It gets worse when:
- I touch the volume knobs or active/passive switch
- Turn up the amp volume
It gets better when:
- I touch the metal case on the instrument cable connector. Note: I need only touch it lightly. I am not pushing the connector in further to make a better connection.
There is no change when:
- change volume levels on guitar
- switch between passive/active mode
- use different instrument cable
- plug amp into outlet without ground
- plug amp into different outlet/circuit
- shut off all fluorescent lights in house
- run signal through preamp (Fisher)
- run signal in and through DI. Lifting gnd makes no difference.
Here is what makes it more confusing to me:
- no buzz when my acoustic bass is plugged into my same amp (same cable)
- no buzz when Fender MM plugged into different amp at church (same cable)
I found Phil D'Eon's excellent article improving the shielding and grounding on the same Fender and intend to implement his modifications.
www.talkbass.com/wiki/index.php/Silencing_the_Noise_on_a_Marcus_Miller_Signature_BassBecause he was not fixing a buzz as bad as mine, I wonder if something else is wrong.
It doesn't make sense that the Fender buzzes with one amp and not another. Nor, that the same amp doesn't buzz with my acoustic bass.
This is my first electric bass so this is all new to me. Any keen insights?
Thank for any help you can offer.
