I am wondering if anyone could help me
I want to install a HUM SINGLE SINGLE on my TELECASTER and set it up like a strat with a 5 way switch.
I want to keep these
1. NECK 2. NECK+MIDDLE 5. BRIDGE
But I want to swap these for something else
3. MIDDLE 4. MIDDLE+BRIDGE
To make this easier maybe il say the positions im interested in but to explain them can be a bit confusing assuming they are possible
NECK AND BRIDGE i think its called "out of phase"(so it would sound like positions 2 and 4 on a strat or the middle position on a LP)
NECK AND BRIDGE not in series but just like they are both on at the same time
NECK AND BRIDGE in series
--------
so, could any of these fill the two spare positions on my 5 way switch? I would really like to keep the standard 5 way switch for this mod and not have to use a superswitch.
Thanks all for taking the time to read this post.

"NECK AND BRIDGE not in series but just like they are both on at the same time" this is the same thing as parallel. Between two pickups, you can only have four options that I can think of; (1)Parallel in phase, which is like a 'normal' three way pickup switch with both on at the same time, (2) Parallel out of phase, (3) Series in phase, and (4) Series out of phase. Of the two out of phase sounds, the series one is probably most useful because it's louder and that's important because out of phase cut's frequencies and sounds quieter.
I used the 'T-riffic' mod with some changes on my Coyote Dancer strat. The thread is on this board under 'slantbucker wiring scheme'. I had to use one of those big switches though.....

rod, Dugg's correct, whenever you involve three pickups in a series and parallel scheme, you'll need a SuperSwitch (4P5T). They can be had for 12 to 25 bucks, depending on whether your shopping-fu is strong or weak. If you forego the middle pup, then your standard (DP5T) switch can do the job - in fact, you can have all three of your 'extra' choices, IINM. To paraphrase an old joke, you can have one from Column A, or one from Column B........ Sorry 'bout that. HTH sumgai

thanks DUGG and SUMGAI, i was misunderstanding , i thought a LP in the middle was out of phase, but now i understand it to be parallel in phase? correct me if im wrong
so now, i see the four options:
1. NECK+BRIDGE out of phase
2. NECK+BRIDGE in phase
3. NECK*BRIDGE in phase
4. NECK*BRIDGE out of phase
dugg you said out of the 2 out of phase sounds series is better and now that i think about it i can hear in my imagination its not the sound im looking for so i'll rub that off my list! that leaves me with 3 options:
1. NECK+BRIDGE in phase
2. NECK*BRIDGE in phase
3. NECK*BRIDGE out of phase
---------------------------------------
so il ask this question again just to clarify
using only a standard 5 way switch could i have any of these 3 sounds in place of either position 3 or 4 on the 5 way switch?
i do have a superswitch but im a bit staunch on keeping with the 5 way even if that means i could only have one of these 3 sounds.

This replaces the 'middle only' position with 'neck and bridge in series' You still keep the parallel tones at 2 and 4, but they can be quite useful. Adding a phase switch at either the neck or bridge pickup will give you 'neck and bridge in series and out of phase' as well as a (rather useless IMHO) parallel out of phase combination (neck and middle or bridge and middle) You can add the phase switch by using a push/pull pot if you don't want extra switches. You also might want to look at this scheme, which is about the most creative use of the std Strat switch I have seen: Unique use of 5-way switchNot exactly what you have proposed, and, as Pete mentioned, you'd need to add a push/pull pot for the OOP options- but it does give some parallel and series possibilities using just the 5-way. Look at ChrisK's comment to that thread beginning with "For the Strativarious among us . . ." to see the possible 3 pup combos. Since you don't propose splitting coils on your HB, it can be treated just like another single coil for the purposes of the scheme in question.

Thanks PETE12345 and NEWEY and the others thats more food for thought. Suppose its best to go back to the drawing board a few hundred times before picking up the soldering iron.
okay, ive narrowed this down again and this is what im looking for
1. NECK+BRIDGE in phase
i believe this is simple enough to get with a push pull or an extra switch but il ask this question,
Would it be possible to have this sound on my 5 way switch in place of position 3(middle pup) or 4(middle+bridge?)
I would be very gratefull if someone could clarify this. cheers.
This has led me on a new train of thought and i have more questions regarding another idea but id better move this to a new thread

rod - I don't know if a standard 5-way can be wired this way , but this switch seems to be the simplest way to get what you're lookin' for . www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,-and-knobs/1/megaswitches.html To me , this might be easiest for switching " on the fly " as well . Good luck -lpf3 EDIT : rod , I thought my link would go right to the "E" model that's the switch I'm talkin' about for this job

Rod: You could easily replace position 4 with neck + bridge in phase by switching the hot wires for neck and middle pups with each other.
That would give you these options:
1. neck 2. neck and middle 3. middle 4. neck and bridge 5. bridge
If that confuses you let me know and I'll post back with a simple drawing.

I agree DUGG, the kindness shown on the site is amazing. Thank you all for taking the time.
LPF3 youve opened up a whole new world with that switch, i dont want to let my mind wander down that street just yet!
KEVINSAALE, thanks too, thats satisfied my curiosity, brilliant! Now i know it can be done, ill put the on the shelf till i decide between that and the other idea i had in part 2. (i would love a diagram if you have the time- no rush for it- maybe you could post it on here so if anyone else would like to see it they can, cheers)
Im going to be away for a few days so if i dont reply to any posts or comments ul know im not ignoring anyone. keep up the good work folks

There ya go. You only have to switch like two wires. Super easy. If you have a strat style guitar with two tone knobs then you will also have to move the corresponding wire from the tone pot as well if you want your tone controls to affect the same pickups as they did before the switch

If you switch it around so you have neck+bridge instead of middle+bridge, you could swap the neck and middle pickups over. This places the reverse-wound pickup in the neck position, making the new neck+bridge combination hum-cancelling. Doing it this way you don't actually need to move any wires.
The switching will go like this.
1: middle 2:neck+middle 3:neck 4:neck+bridge 5:bridge
As a possible alternative, you could try the 'seven sound strat' or 'blender' modification (do a google search) This is a stock parts mod which makes one of the tone pots blend in the unselected end pickup, so you can get all 5 normal settings with blending to neck+bridge and 'all 3' In fact, you get more than 7 sounds, since you can have e.g neck +2/3 bridge, or middle+bridge+2/3 neck etc. The remaining tone pot is wired as a master tone control
