Last week I took the in series wiring out of my Strat and put stock wiring back in. I took the push/pull pot and ran two separate caps from it so I could switch between them. Well, one of those capacitors didn't work and I decided to say the heck with the idea for a little while until I could experiment more and decide exactly which caps I wanted. I put the wiring back to stock, only one cap, and now my tone knobs don't work at all. The only change I made is that instead of use the switch on a push/pull pot I am now simply running the cap to ground directly from my first tone pot. I have been though 5 caps in the past two days and I am starting to go nuts. I can't get any variance out of my tone knobs no matter what I do. Surely the caps are not all bad. Even the original one doesn't work now. I have been over my wiring a few times checking that all is in the correct spot. I have tested each pot and both are putting out close to the stated amount of ohms. Any ideas? It shouldn't matter which pot I ground the cap too, right? I'm about to start saying some curse words.

We try to keep things family friendly around here, so be a little careful what you type. You can say whatever you want, though. So, one end of the cap goes to ground, where's the other end connected? A guts shot would be be best, but an accurate diagram could also help.

It's a standard Strat wiring. Looking at the back of the pickguard with everything wired up, the cap runs through the right lead on the first tone pot to the middle lead on the second tone pot. The other end is connected to ground. I'm going to take it apart again later and recheck that everything is wired up correctly. I'm 99.999999999(ad infinitum)% sure that it is. Oh, I will certainly watch what I type onto the page. ;D
If you want to look at a diagram though, go to fender.com and look at the "Roadhouse" diagram. I'm sure it's the same as an American Standard wiring.

How about a photo of the inside wiring?

There's a thread on how to do that, right? I'll have to read it and then see if I can find a digital camera to take the shot with. Maybe have something by tomorrow.

I was able to get my tone knobs working again this afternoon. I put a new cap on, the other ones I had been using were older, and now it works. I think it's odd that out of 7 only one worked but than I also suppose any thing is possible. Well, at least it works now. Thanks, folks.
