I guess it had to happen. Fender has jumped on the "relic finish" bandwagon: Fender Road-Worn SeriesSo, now we can all line up to spend big dollars to buy a new Strat, Tele or bass with yellowed plastic, a rusty bridge, and no "Ooh Shiny" to it. How all that serves to make the guitar "as comfortable as an old pair of jeans" is beyond my ken. How many more ways to market Strats and Teles can Fender come up with? And are they ever going to have a fresh idea over there? As it stands now, I'd bet there's more types of Strats available than Baskin-Robbins has flavors of ice cream.

The above quote is from the ad that newey posted a link to . I guess this is so that people who don't wear out their guitar can act like they did .
I know for sure I'm missing something .

I'm wondering if this isn't a clever ploy to sell the guitars shipped in a leaky container from Korea or China... Here's an early prototype...

I prefer the ones that are made to have the same battle scars as your favorite artist. Joe Strummer's Tele, the SRV Strat, etc...

I find my guitars all play better after 30 sec in the microwave followed by a brief session with the wood chipper.
Thank you, thank you.
(Guitar marketing has indeed taken a sad direction...)

Yeah, that there beautiful '57 Goldtop! Holy mother of cow pies, that's a mighty big microwave. Baskin-Robbins only has 31 flavors of ice cream. I've had that many Strats over the years (well, that many Fenders). Only if'n they gets a good beating as they pass thru Mexico (which is way much less that improbable). Fender model numbers 013xxxx-xxx are Mexican in origin. These all have the skinny neck (1.650"). Now, that's marketing, selling Mexican Fenders for the price of a U.S. made Standard Strat. If you beat on your guitar, it goes down in value, if it's pre-beaten, it goes up. To be fair, they do have a nitrocellulose-lacquer finish, and are supercharged* with Tex-Mex™ pickups and 6105 frets. I care about the finish and 6105's are my favorite fret size, although every U.S. Highway 1 that I've played (nitrocellulose-lacquer finish) seemed dull in tone. *" supercharged" is a marketing term that means absolutely nothing and therefor incurs no liability for anything including nothing. This statement may include forward-looking statements which should not be interpreted to mean anything including nothing. This statement may also include backward-looking statements which should be interpreted to mean nothing including everything. Furthermore, this statement may be interpreted by some as being somewhat irreverent toward those engaged in the legal profession** and should not be construed to be an apology in any stretch of anyone's imagination, but if it is construed to be such, then it is unknowingly denied. **Except for you, and you know who you are.

Surely selling these with a deluxe gig bag is defeating the point?

Not at all. The Owner can't afford to have his own relic-ing detracting from the Original Fender factory relic-ing.
After these increase in value, the next buyer will want only the factory pre-relic-ing, without any later re-relic-ing modifications. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a genuine Fender factory relic-ed relic. ;D ;D

So, the question arises again; are we worried about fake counterfeits or counterfeit fakes?

I just about gagged when I got the simultaneous MF, GC AND Fender Direct mailings on these products...all within the last week & 1/2 or so. My decades old battle worn dreadnought and Fender Bass look bran-spankin' new compared to these. I spent the summer before last making my 30 yr old tele copy look new....
....Why would I want any of these products...
Kinda like them giving my FM212R a blackface (which is really a silver/grey face), renaming it a "FrontMan" and charging another $90 bucks for it (just one year later).
....except that the markup is way more on this deal.
One word Fender: "Yawn"

But wait, there's more! Why spend big bucks on a factory pre-relic'd version when you can temporarily relic your Tele style guitar with a removable vinyl overlay? New at MF"Low Tack" adhesive makes it completely reversible. Play it "relic'd" at the Bierstube on Friday night, peel it off to look classy for that wedding gig Saturday afternoon! This is clearly a counterfeit fake. And, for those who dislike the relic look, they have the leopard skin one,

Strange that they didn't mention that it was invented by Rick Parfitt... www.guitarfacelift.com/about.htmWell, 'invented'. Lets assume his business partner was the facilitator of the idea.

Ye gads! Gadzooks and holy water (apparently is not for washing your hands in ). They're serious. Seriously! A guitar prophylactic. I wonder if it reduces the sensation of tone......

Possibly, but at least it means that you can play all your best licks in every bar round town without hearing someone else playing them a few months later...

You know, on second thought, I can see where this would have been useful...
I could have put the white one certain ex-band members guitars...brought an erasable marker...put the set list on it...man, where was this thing 25 years ago...
