After 9 months, the Lemonbacker, my original Ric4001 replica gets a friend - here's the mark 2 version to be finished in natural tru-oiled maple cap on walnut body, cherry/maple sandwich neck. Still a bit more work to do on her.

Very, very pretty. You do very professional work.
You should get a really punchy Rick tone out of this combination of tonewoods. Does the walnut and maple make this a heavy beast? I've never used walnut due to the weight, but I'm curious about your opinion.
If you get a chance to knock out some sound samples I'd like to hear them.
Again, another beautiful build.

Another beautiful build, flat! I'm beginning to think you churn out more basses in a year than Rickenbacker does.

Thx guys, its not weighty as the ric bass bodies are only 1.25" think, barely enough to sink a router into. The walnut has a fair bit of mass to it though. I have a solid bubinga P-bass i pout together a couple of years ago, thats about 1.75" think and it kills your shoulder, but a great low end. the ric has more of a sharp treble attack due to the pickups and the relatively thick maple cap. Another 2 weeks work and it will be ready to play.

Pickguardian delivered today, machine heads from Gav's ebay shop. Here's all the bits in place - final sanding, tru-oil finishing and nut-cutting left on the agenda.

Now, that bridge pickup wouldn't be a dual-rail guitar pickup, would it? Very cool!
How is this going to be wired?

Far be it from me to offer suggestions to an advanced builder, such as yourself...but I'm gonna toss this one out anyway... I noticed you've made a plastic cover to mount the bridge pickup. Just a thought, but have you considered using a piece of wood for this purpose? I mention this as years ago I had a job adding a neck pickup to bass with a birdseye maple top. I routed for the EBO pickup he "said" he was going to use...then he shows up with an old Fender Jazz pickup he'd decided to drop in "..because it's like Jaco's, man..." Well, the old story of "no matter how many times I cut this board, it's too short" rings true here. The routed hole was the wrong size for the pickup. I had no pickguard material to work with, so I went to the hardwood shop and found a 1/8" (4mm) piece of burl wood (maple, oak or walnut burl works best) and scrolled a design out of it, routed for the Jazz pickup, finished it and mounted that to the maple top. It was a way out initially, but I was struck with how much better the tone was then with a plastic cover. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Very nice build, by the way... The bridge pup is a seymour duncan ric-4001/2-replacement pickup, its hb but I'm not doing anything fancy with it. i know, I might get drummed off the forum for not installing a coil cut/series/parallel/multi-select rheostat thermister but I'm gonna leave the red and white taped together and just use it neat. The electrics will be as per the std ric bass - neck vol, neck tone, bridge vol, bridge tone, 3 way switch, nice and stock. The bridge pup surround is a special product from Pickguardian dot com which is meant as a replacement for the ric chrome pup mount stuff, and also made to fit the SD pickup. www.pickguardian.com/pickguardian/RICBridgePUPlate.htmlIt neatens the guitar off nicely - not as aesthetically pleasing as a wood one would be but it kinda matches the rest of the build well.

And I was trying to get all settled into not wanting any more gear! Now this beautiful build has me hankering for a Ric again! It does look fantastic, and the natural approach will really make the most of the choice wood you have there. Can't help noticing that you are going for the 'Rickenbacker' logo on the truss rod cover this time though? Did the Lemonbacker one not satisfy?

This one is the RickenBaker, its for the son of our singer, Owen Baker. See what I did there? Funny heh. ;D Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe. Randomising letters in the middle of words [has] little or no effect on the ability of skilled readers to understand the text. This is easy to denmtrasote. In a pubiltacion of New Scnieitst you could ramdinose all the letetrs, keipeng the first two and last two the same, and reibadailty would hadrly be aftcfeed. Ansaylis did not come to much beucase the thoery at the time was for shape and senqeuce retigcionon. Saberi's work sugsegts we may have some pofrweul palrlael prsooscers at work. The resaon for this is suerly that idnetiyfing coentnt by paarllel prseocsing speeds up regnicoiton. We only need the first and last two letetrs to spot chganes in meniang. Happy Trails Cyinacl One

Hey Newey, you know you posted about the 'Best of 2008' awards a day or two back? The one above gets my vote for 2009 on typing effort alone! But who is Saberi, Cyn? Oh hang on, I see, Sbreai... And I hope Rick enjoys his new 'Baker enough to avert the upcoming law suit!

Can you spell cporhygiht inifgremient?
I hope Ric aren't as persnickety as some others (Fender comes to mind) are said to be.

Can you spell cporhygiht inifgremient? Use the Parody Defense. The bass is clever, produces no financial gain and does not cast aspersions or tarnish the reputation of Rickebecker. Just don't play it naked and you're golden.... Happy Trails Cynical One

Can you spell cporhygiht inifgremient? I hope Ric aren't as persnickety as some others (Fender comes to mind) are said to be. You got this the wrong way round, thousand s of amateur hobby builders and enthusiasts make their own fender-shaped and gibson-shaped guitars every year and no-one cares. When someopne posts one in the shape of a ric it seems to cause worldwide hysteria and shouts of copyright infringement. They seem a lot more paranoid about issues, i reckon the Ric guys are the worst of the lot. I saw one guy got a massive flaming on the ric forum for asking about bass dimensions. If he'd bothered looking at the ric spec pages on the same website the company had posted all the relevant information anyway! My view is this is purely for my own enjoyment, not a money making exercise and on close inspection this clearly looks nothing like a real ric, any resemblance to an actual instrument is purely coincidental.
