I am customizing my old Jackson and need to know what the best primers, paints and finishers are??? I am looking for a really flat black finish with all chrome hardware. Thanks for the input...

well, soild finishes (vs. dyes) are the simplest in terms of materials needed and number of steps but really difficult to get perfect w/out a professional spraybooth. all that's really needed for a solid finish is a primer, color coats, clearcoat, and various grades of sandpaper. i used basic hardware spray paints and a poly clear finish, both of which are fine for the job, just make sure they are quality products. but get prepared to be really frustrated and to invest a lot of time and effort. and don't plan on playing the guitar for at least a few weeks. it takes a long time for finishes to dry properly and nothing ever goes right and you will sand improperly and will have to do a layer all over again, etc. i've done it once cuz i thought it might be fun. boy, was i wrong. you may really dig it, but i'd rather be PLAYING a guitar! reranch has a section called "basic refinishing" that's a good place to start: www.reranch.com/they also have specialty products for refinishing. also check out: www.projectguitar.com/tut/tutorial5.htm

Look into EMRON paint.-- --It is a marine grade paint that is rather expensive, but WELL worth the extra bucks. It can be prepared and or mixed in just about any color form and or shade.-- -- There is a clearcoat finish that they make, that will make it look like there are 100 coats on your project. This clear coat is extremely durable and when dry, becomes as dense as granite in my opinion. True clarity and brilliant lustre as opposed to several other epoxy clear coats out there, that have a dingy clarity.-- -- Make sure that when you are spraying, you take extreme caution to have a DUST FREE enviroment and good ventelation for even drying.-- --Spray as thin a coat as possible or you will end up with un-reperable streaks and runs-- - - -- that will show up more than any scratch or ding.--- -- Good luck!!! With some time and effort you should end up with a perfect new finish.-- - -;D
