Has anyone seen a strat that has a tuner built into the guitar. Something like six leds along the edge somewhere that can be toggled on by a hidden switch. Nutty idea...just wondering.

Its not so nutty. Lots of acoustic guitars have this. Also, the guts of a small inexpensive tuner, running on a couple of AAA cells could easily be built in. A toggle to switch on power and connect the tuner/mute the guitar is al that would be needed.

I have a small black tuner with a built-in microphone. While I can plug a cord into it, I don't. I just lay it on the top of my solid body guitars and it works fine. It was $20 several years back. It still is. accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Korg-CA30-Chromatic-Tuner?sku=210527You don't even need to connect/switch/mute the guitar signal. Just turn the tuner power on/off.

I have a similar tuner. It also comes in handy for checking intonation. It has cool red lights and the display light up too....ooooh, pretty colors...

But does it work on the seafood? ...with a light batter and some white wine I'm sure it works fine...

Yes but..... ...when attempting to wrangle some reasonably sonorous tuning into ones strings, while at the same time ones musical compadres are making loud random twanging noises as they try to remember what they were trying to play last week, it is advantageous if ones in-built tuning contraption is not confused by such spurious noises, and so methinks it is best configured as a directly wired connection to the guitar. Needs a switch anyway for power so it may as well do the other jobs too..

Good point, John. I overlooked that because the extent of my gigging is singing to a calendar in the basement with a Les Paul on it ... not much interference in the competing for the mic department. Having said that, those cheap tuners do also have the 1/4" plugin for the patch c hord though. Oh, dash it! If we are not guitarnuts ... build it into the guitar!

I'm amazed nobody has mentioned the N-Tune onboard chromatic tuner. It's the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread: Edit - fixed the link to point at the official website. Thanks ChrisK!

I'd be tempted to build one into an effects pedal-type setup. My pedal has a tuner function, but I don't think it would be too difficult to build a tuner pedal, using the guts of a cheap tuner with a footswitch turning on the tuner and connecting the signal to it.
