How can you brighten or treble up a SG?

Hey guitar peeps, my SG saga continues. I put back my 57' classic and plus, and now she sounds even warmer do the fact that I put new vol and tone pots. And a tonepro bridge and tail piece. Now, I have my od pedal trebed out and that's rare. Most of the od or dist. pedals I have owned, I've needed to crank down the tone aleast halfway cut to the razor's edge until I reinstalled my 57's. I would like to believe that it's the new pots and bridge. What can I do to treble it up?? HELP!

As noted in the previous thread, you might be able to accomplish your goal by rewiring them from intra-series to intra-parallel. By that I mean the two coils within each pickup.

Normally they are wired together in series, which is part of what's giving you that warm tone. Putting them in parallel will tend to thin out some of that warmth, resulting in a bit more treble. Almost a chime-like effect, but since the two coils are so close together physically, you won't think 'chime' so much as 'bright'.

This might also drop the overall output level a tad, but you shouldn't need to crank your FDR up to more than 2½. ;D

Is the tone dark all of the time, or is the issue when you turn the volume controls down?

Did you put 250K pots instead of 500K? 500K will brighten things up a tad.

It sounds like you need some series capacitance in the form of a high-pass filter.

If I recall, you had some brighter pickups in before. Maybe you should just use them.


Are the '57 pickups single conductor plus shield or four-wire plus shied?
