I bought a used Hagstrom Ultra Swede a couple months ago when I went in to pick up some strings, etc. (Impulse buy, of course). I sat down, played it and really liked it. When I get it home, I did some research on it and find that its made in China. To say the least, I was surprised because the quality was very good. If I had known it was made in China, would I have bought it? Not sure but other that needing to adjust the action some, its actually a pretty nice guitar.

Two years too late but I second neweys post on carvin. If I ever buy another guitar for myself its gonna be a carvin. I love the options and wood selections they have. I've esspecially had my eyes on their DC747.... makes me drool every time I see one. Well now since I bring in $2,100 a month my baby may let me pull the trigger on one if I keep the dishes washed and sweet talk her enough. ;D

Normally I'm amused by a post like that. On the high traffic boards, you get called out for bumping old threads or for starting new threads on issues that have been discussed before. It's sort of a Catch22. The humor might have come at a cost this time. If you look carefully, this thread was resurrected by bluesboy. He has a grand total of 1 post. I do hope he wasn't put off by that reply. His name has popped up a couple of times in the Users Online section, but he hasn't posted again. I'd hate to think we scared him away. From the looks of his post he doesn't seem annoying or anything.

I happened upon this forum a couple months ago after I made the decision a year ago to pick up the guitar again after a 25 year hiatus. I really enjoy reading (lurking) the forum to try and learn a few things. Hopefully my presence and occasional comments won't offend too many here. Glad to be aboard and will try not be too stupid. Thanks.

I just wanted to comment. A quick disclaimer, because I value *everyone's* opinions, nothing I state here is intended as directed towards any particular poster at all, so if it appears so, just chalk it up to coincidence I grew up poor. Even so, my parents managed to make sure I had more than just the bare necessities. One Christmas I got a Millennium Falcon and some Star Wars figures (the original Kenner stuff). So I wasn't deprived, but I did learn that I wasn't part of a family where I got the best stuff. I got Okay stuff and it was Okay with me. I've never been able to shake that, which is one reason I enjoy building guitars. I'm a bargain hunter and I take a lot of joy in making myself something that is as good, or better, than something expensive (no ego intended there, I still consider myself a Neophyte in the guitar-building hobby). My first guitar was a Lazer acoustic. It was horrible. I don't recall where it was made, but it was a POS of the lowest magnitude. Still, I learned how to bang out a rough approximation of "Hard to Handle" by the Black Crows... that is, when I could get the bridge to quit moving all around on me. My father had a much beloved Yamaha acoustic. I doubt it was very expensive, but I played with it whenever I got the chance, but there's nothing like playing your own guitar. I learned to respect a well-made guitar even when it didn't cost much, and to this day I *love* Yamaha guitars. So, once my dad saw that I had a real interest in playing, he got me a pawn shop Hondo white Strat knock off. I think my dad paid about $75.00 for it. It had some kind of short in the bridge humbucker that added some weird distortion. To me it was like having a cheap on-board distortion pedal.. not that I knew anything about that sort of stuff back then. I played the living hell out of that guitar. Looking back, it played like crap, but it was a real guitar. I think it was Korean... maybe Japanese. I think that with a proper setup and a little maintenance it might have been a hell of a guitar. Crappy picture but it's the only one I have of it. As regards the "decorating," I was a kid, so I think it can be forgiven My next guitar, which I got second-hand at Ronnie's Guitar shop in Pearl, MS, was a Yamaha RGZ-something or other. It was lavender, but someone had banged a nick into the back of it, so it was on sale. If I recall, maybe $125.00. I loved that guitar. I get wistful now just thinking about it. I lost it in typical young musician style after pawning it to help pay for a plane ticket back from Hollywood and then not being able to get it back out in time. (Yes, that's me playing it at Hal and Mal's in Jackson, MS) After I lost that one to the pawn shop, I went guitar-less for a few years. My next guitar was an Ibanez RGZ-270, which I still have, and which I have modded/upgraded the hell out of. Honestly at the point in time I still didn't know jack about guitars other than how to play. That guitar was actually a terrible choice for my playing style, but I managed to make it work fairly well. Then and Now I paid WAY too much for it, but that's mainly because my ex-wife got it for me in credit and then never paid more than the first payment, so after we got divorced, I paid it off, plus penalties, plus interest, plus whatever. Regardless, it was another cheap guitar not made in the USA. For years that and a black Takamine acoustic were my only guitars. Now, I've got a decent job, nothing extraordinary, but I suppose I could afford to pay a lot for a MIA guitar, but it just goes against my nature. I'm also not that great of a guitarist and it's hard to justify a $2000 guitar when I don't play like a $2000 guitarist. It's also hard to justify it when I've got a massive addiction to upgrading and modding. I'd love to buy American, but I don't feel that the MIA quality is worth what's being asked for it. I'll probably get some flack for that, but I love cheap well-made guitars. I don't mean to come off as Anti-American-Made, but this country has such a long tradition of paying stupidly inflated prices for a Brand that I feel almost adversarial towards the companies. I think at last count I've got 24 or so guitars and as far as I can recall, only my DIY Telecaster, my Godin Radiator, and my Fender Jazz bass are American made (the Godin is made in the USA of Canadian parts). I've got a buddy who just recently bought a sub-$200 SX Jazz bass from Rondomusic.com. Admittedly the first one he got had a small issue with the finish, but after the guy there sent a replacement, he plays it more than his 72 Fender P bass. The SX bass is amazing quality. I recently bought a "crafted in China" Washburn WI14 off of Amazon for $169. It's a gorgeous Blue and I love the shape of it. Not the greatest reason to buy a guitar, but for that price I could afford disappointment. Everything about the guitar is nice. The wood is nice, the neck is nice, the pickups are very nice, tuners are great, finish is immaculate. I truly love playing this guitar. I just snagged a gloss black XV599 Xavier guitar from GuitarFetish.com (haven't received it yet) and I'm looking forward to seeing how good a Chinese Xavier is. The biggest complaint I've had about Chinese/Korean/Indonesian guitars is that when a mistake is made in a place that's not readily visible, it seems they are far more likely to repair it (sometimes well, sometimes not) and keep going whereas an American manufacturer might have tossed it aside as "B stock." Anyway, I forgot where I was going with all of that a ways back. Now I'm just rambling.

So did I, a few years back. I think I paid about $65.00 for mine, but it was just the neck and body, no pickups or electricals, no bridge, no tuners. I didn't . Mine underwent a bilateral radical boutectomy:

LOL!!! at the shape!!! balalaika type! Well, I always thought that too, but somebody nicknamed it The Great Pumpkin, and that name has stuck ever since. A different picture of this guitar used to be newey's avatar, before you joined The NutzHouse. But if I were to want to rock out with a balalaika, I'd go for this gizmo: Who needs ToneWood? sumgai

put three wheels on it and a lawnmower engine and you can play all night and then drive it home.

Much as I don't condone trademark infringement, they are probably made with far better craftsmanship than what they are trying to copy, if the Chinese guitars I have are any indication.

My Chinese made Ibanez AS73, is one of those guitars I intend to be buried with. Yes, it took tweaking, but the bones were good to begin with. Of course, there are true examples of professional garbage coming out of China. Most of the P90 Epi specials... the Squier Affinity's, the list can be endless, but the good stuff, well, Peerless, Some of the upper end Epiphones from china, Parker did their line of acoustics from China. My attitude is simple, if it plays good, who cares where it's from?

I bought a BadCat Vintage Series '59 FlameTop Les Paul from ebay. My thinking being if I get ripped off ebay will refund me and if all goes well I'll get a decent Les Paul copy for £235.
Ordered it at the beginning of August, received it mid October.
Apart from some minor fret buzz on the B string the guitar was beautiful and plays extremely well. Well worth the wait, in fact.
Of course 2 weeks after getting it I bit the bullet and went out and bought a 3 year old Gibson LP Traditional and I now have a far better understanding of the quality of Gibson. I knew this anyway but I think you have to own one and pay the premium to truly appreciate this fact.

fsstbob72-
Hello and Welcome to G-Nutz2!
You've resurrected an old thread, but that's OK.
No question the Gibby is going to be of a higher quality. The question for me has always been whether the increase in quality is worth the substantial price premium they charge. Of course, buying yours second-hand, you may have avoided paying the full list-price premium Gibson charges these days.

Hello there, I tried to reply yesterday but as it wouldn't allow me to add a couple of pics of my Chinese LP I gave up.
Your point pretty much hits the nail on the head. I bought it back in August when I couldn't see it likely I'll buy a Gibson and my thinking was if I get 75% of a Gibson for 8 times less the price then that's a good deal.
The Gibson is beautiful, expensive, everything I expected it would be but the BadCat LP was astonishing in its quality and just what a great players guitar.
That's why I wanted to add photos so everyone can get an idea how good it is. Now, that may just be my example with many others having the opposite experience, that would be for them to speak of.
Logically or on paper the Chinese LP must be considered the better buy but I wouldn't change what I did or felt the tiniest regret at paying a lot of money for my Gibson. It was the right move and I would do it again 😊

I have one of the Guitar Centre "Guitar of the Month" Gibsons from 2007. It's the Zebrawood Firebird. It's a beast and love it, but it clearly came to me unsullied from the manufactory (via someone else that couldn't get on with it) and I have to say the thing was disgraceful. I have played around with it and it's a little better. I swapped out the hideous chrome for nickel hardware. You can see obvious clones on DHGate that look awesome (albeit the maple winged one they also did that year) for a fraction of the Gibson price and I really don't believe they could be set up any worse than my USA instrument. Being just one guitar (and the only Gibson I possess) my 'bird is an unrepresentative example of Gibson quality, but I think you can guess where I'm going with this ...1/10 of the price? Hmmm. I agree that you should audition a few and choose the one that speaks to you personally, and any wise person would concur in my view.

I agree that you should audition a few and choose the one that speaks to you personally, and any wise person would concur in my view. No, not just "speak to you"..... It should grab you by the throat and scream in your face: " Play me, dammit!! And keep playing me, or I'll make your life so misesrable that you'll move Heaven and Earth to get me back into your hands!!" It should make you lose sleep when you're not playing it, and it should make your spouse/SO feel so jealous that they're openly threatening to leave you, and will file for custody of the kids 'cause you're a sorry excuse for a father. In short, it should make you absolutely blind to all other guitars out there, no matter what. If your proposed purchase doesn't do that for you/to you, then it's a sure bet that it's gonna stay in the case, under the bed, until you finally sell it... without a qualm. Your choice, bunky. HTH sumgai
