Will this switch work for a guitar?

Hi there,

It has two extra poles (+ and -). I'm not circuit savvy, thus I don't know if it will cause problems in a guitar or not. I know how an SPDT switch works. I'm hoping to use two of them -- one to cut each HB. Thanks in advance, Andru.

The + and - are for the lights. I don't think you need those for the switch itself to work. Might be cool if you could get it to react somehow to your picking, but that's another topic.

The problem I'm seeing is that it's a Momentary switch. Unless it's meant as kill switch for that EVH/RATM type thing, it probably won't be satisfactory. Sounded like you wanted it for a coil shunt, so I don't think it's gonna work.

There doesn't appear to be a light on it(?) Other versions of the same switch have LEDs, however.

I am glad to hear it will work! It should make for a nice switch on the upper section of a j-master copy (i.e. where the neck pup controls usually go).

Hi Andru,

and welcome to Guitar Nuts.

That switch will work and it is not a momentary switch which makes it heighly suitable for a guitar.

I'd be concerned with the size of that switch. How big a hole will that put into your guitar? Not that I'm afraid of putting a large switch into a guitar. Go here and look at the guitars with rocker switches. www.1728.com/super7.htm (yeah, those are mine).

I'd also be concerned about the expense of that switch. (Some of those guitars on that webpage require six SPDT switches and one DPDT). That would be a small fortune if I paid 10 bucks each for those. There are a lot of good online sites for electronic supplies.

Yes Andru,it will work but I have to agree with Wolf,it is too big because it is built to withstand a much bigger current than you will find in a guitar.Since you want to split two humbuckers I would recommend a miniature DPDT toggle switch.That way you only have to use one switch to split both humbuckers simultanously.I have a switch like that on one of my Gibsons installed in the factory as standard.It looks like the switches on Wolf´s guitar.Doesn´t get in the way but there when you need it.If you want something bigger,get one that will fit in a pot hole(9mm)or at most the size of a hole for a Gibsontype toggle switch(12mm).Good Luck!

Hi folks,

Thanks for the input. The cut size diameter is 16mm, which doesn't seem too big. The fact that it's built to handle larger current doesn't matter, correct? I don't want to wire both of em on a dpdt because you lose versatility (i.e. forced to cut em both at once). I'm staying away from toggles because my haphazard style sometimes flicks 'em accidentally. The beauty about that chromed brass switch is that it only extends 1mm out of the casing when it's disengaged (or engaged, whatever way you look at it). The only thing I am concerned about now is the depth of the darn thing! Both switches are going on the lower horn of this hybrid: store.guitarfetish.com/xvofhygugfsp1.html. They'll be mounted on the pickguard, recessed into frostner holes (I'm assuming routing is not there already). A Duncan Lilttle 59 is going in the bridge, GFS alnico mini in the neck, Fender 4-way for series/parallel, and a Fender standard strat neck. I shall post a link to pics when it's all done!
