Need to understand some wiring terminology

Hello Nutz people

I am new here, and my Name is David. I hope to enjoy my staying here with the nutz and of course the best guys all over the net for custom wiring

First of all, I have an old ibanez H S H guitar. I thought instead of selling it, It would be better to modify it.

But first, I need to know somethings about wiring especially series and parallel stuff before going to begin the project. As far as I know, the rule is pickups are connected in parallel to the circuit, however, the coils of a humbucker for example could be either connected in series or parallel.
Also I heard that single coils could only be connected in parallel, Is that true ?If that is true, Does that mean that the 3rd position in
H S H guitar; the middle coil is connected in parallel not in series ?

In an H S H guitar, the coil split pos 2 and 4, Are they connected in parallel or series ?

Hi mclord, welcome to GN2 - you will find many wonderful and crazy wiring schemes here,although HSH is fairly uncommon.

In almost all commercial guitars ever built, the following apply:

The coils of a humbucker are wired in series to each other, or if there is a coil-cut switch, only one coil is used.

Combinations of pickups are nearly always done in parallel. But they can be done in series. We have a lot of schemes here for three single coils in series, and commercial examples include the Brian May Red Special, and Fender Strat wiring incorporating the S1 switch

A few guitars offer phase reverse on one or more pickups.

So theres lots of scope for us to extend that!

Guessing - your HSH probably has just the single S pickup in the middle position (with one coil only, series/parallel has no meaning) - likley the coil splits in 2 and 4 are combining the coils of the middle and one Hb coil in parallel.

Aha.. So in positions 2 and 4 where the middle coil and one of either neck or bridge are combined, they are connected in parallel like strat guitar configurations, Right ?

BTW: Some one told me you have a special scheme for having a lot of series/parallel & hunbucker/series combinations. My idea is similar with the H S H.

McL we are fairly relaxed about posting, but to keep things clear, maybe start a new thread with a title that lets people know its gonna be about HSH wiring schemes. Then let us know what youd like to do. Maybe describe what guitar you are basing it on, and what controls it now has, and what you would like to do with it. Do you have particular features youd like to add? or just open to suggestions for a cool project?
