Hadn't seen this until now, but....
The JB is kinda nice... play one clean and it gets a little bit hilarious(ly bad...), but it sounds fine dirty... I own one... Don't think I'll ever buy another.
I use it with my '59. I've had these in three different guitars. In the first guitar the '59 was my favorite pup... period... But it doesn't sound as good in the Dean. I actually prefer the JB for my dirty stuff these days... Trust me, I didn't see that coming!
..but it is one of the most popular pickups ever, so...
BTW when they were in the first one it was my main gigger.
Oh, and of course I use the JB in bridge spot.
And JB=SH-4

i share your dislike of EMGs ...
i have been using the original Duncan Livewires since they first came out , and IMO nothing EMG has ever produced can touch 'em.
dont be so quick to fall in line with what everybody is using ... instead of a JB , try a Gibson Dirty Fingers in the bridge position. DFs are pure molten hot screaming tone ...
try one , you just might fall in love

My only problem with Gibson products, is lack of cash. Unless DF's aren't priced like everything else they sell.

i am a po boy , and have picked up my DFs for less than $50 on the Bay of Ease .
if you buy them new , they are just as overpriced as any Gibson gear.
i have a DF in my SG I , one of my Charvel Model 6s , and one in my Ibanez RG770DX ... and a pair waiting for me to install them in my SRG SG.
in case you cant tell , i LOVE me some Dirty Fingers ;D

To be honest I am not very happy with my EMG85 either. Unfortunately the Schaller active humbucker would not fit the guitar because it is too deep (and I don't want to ruin my second Revelation ATX as I did with the first one).
I am very happy with my Schaller active singlecoil in the neck position. It also was very cheap, around €25. In the bridge position they are so-so.

For what it's worth, I can't stand EMG's either. If you want a nice, clean edge without the dead tone, and something that will shred with the dirtiest gain and distortion, try Bill Lawrence 500 series. I love mine and they are cheaper than SD's.

I love a lovely blues sound. I have a 500XL (B) and a 500R (N) that have that really warm glassy tone, together, neck, and I also have a single to pair up with either HB. And this is on a Korean Ibanez 24-fret (eeeew-YUCK!). I was thinking about dropping EMG's into this one, until I heard about the importance of hand winding and "special-needs" guitar players.
I also have that Dimarzio Tone/Air/Norton/whatever it is in the neck of my parts-o-caster that is just the creamiest!
I guess you need to shop around and listen.

People shun the Korean-made Ibanez models. If it's not Japanese it's crap, apparently. I sold a MIJ RG before I got this one and this one feels better, more balanced, and the paint job is way better. I'd trade it for an AS73L in a heartbeat, though. (Purple/blue metallic flip-flop paint)

pay no attention to the small minded " this or that is crap crowd " a great guitar is a great guitar no matter where it was made.
i remember when people said that Japanese guitars were crap , only USA guitars were worth a darn. then the Japanese guitars became accepted , and it was the Korean guitars that were crap.
i have a Korean made 2005 Ibanez RGT42DXFM , and i will stack that guitar up against USA or Japanese guitars that cost 3 or 4 times as much. its the same mindset that in the 80s said the only good Gibson's were the old ones. the ( then ) new ones were junk . then in the 90's the formerly junky 70's models became "vintage" and good. and now the 80's models are "vintage" while the new ones are not as good. it is a never ending cycle
if you like your Korean Ibanez , and it is the tool that lets you express what is in your heart and soul then it is a great guitar. i dont care what anybody else thinks.

Bravo, Chuck! Well said, and +1 for it!
Going back to the very origins of this Board, in writing The Rules, our founder RandomHero noted that:
Same could be said for Japan vs. Korea vs. USA, etc. One can find many other boards around the web which devolve into "My axe is better than your axe . . ." This sort of thing quickly gets boring.
My late father was fond of saying "Don't knock it 'til you've tried it." It always amazes me when folks passionately dis this or that guitar, because it isn't their favorite brand or whatever, when you just know that nine times out of ten, the person has never so much as picked up the guitar in question.
There are many fine guitars around, and no one has the time or opportunity to play them all. And there are more choices nowadays than ever before for guitarists.

you are 100% right Newey ... this is indeed the golden age of affordable guitars .
i remember when an inexpensive guitar was usually a near unplayable POS with horrible pickups , and hardware.
today , if you have $400 you can get a pretty darned good shiny new guitar . and we havent even talked amps yet .... never has it been easier to get the tone you hear in your head out of your amp.
i have a Line 6 Micro Spider that sounds GREAT on its own ... plug n play ... AND it can run on batteries !

Back on topic, someone ought to put in a good word about EMG around here- just not for their active pups. I'm not a huge fan of active pups in general, and I've never owned anything with the active EMGs.
But I have an EMG "Select" passive pickup in my P-Bass clone. It was about $25 and sounds just fine. They make Strat replacement Selects in the $20-$30 range which have the "pole-less" look and I mean to give those a try sometime.
P.S. When I say "make", I really mean "market", as I'm sure these are Asian-sourced and branded as EMGs.

EMGs have always been like the Emperor's New Pickups to me . i always felt like i was the only one amongst my crowd of friends that stood against the trend. i never understood what all the fuss was about. that is just my personal opinion ... TONS of people LOVED 'em right from the start , so there must be something about the them .
i had a Washburn PRS copy years ago that had 2 Select 'buckers in it , and they were not bad pickups. not my cup o tea , but not horrible enough to ever bother changing them

A reason for me hating EMG's is they have a tendency to make...........................................................all guitarists sound the same....who wants that!! Where I live every guy playing metal will eventually gravitate to EMG and eventually gravitate to that kack sound Kerry Kind has!!!! Death to EMG and any cr-p music!! (my opinion of course not everyones, but who don't love a bit_h!!)

the EMG actives do tend to sound a bit sterile to me . they have their place , and they do certain things well ... just not things i tend to want done ;D

I have a set of 81's in my #1, and for my style of music, they don't work. I would LOVE to get some Pearl Gates in there, or some Gibson puppies, but only time and money can tell...

I too have EMG Selects (P-style) in my Kramer bass, and am very happy with the sound of the instrument. I recall they were dirt cheap for me too. I had less luck with the EMG Select passive humbucker I installed in one of my old Squiers some years ago - totally gutless. It sounded just as wimpy as the stock pup I pulled out. I finally replaced it with a later-model Squier pup that I ended up being pretty satisfied with. The lesson was worth the ten bucks I spent.
I categorically refuse to put active pickups into anything. Batteries are treacherous things.

I have been buying pickups from mick at manlius lately. He winds his own, and they sound great. good pricing, too. Used emg's a LONG time ago, and HATED them. went to Duncans, then to Lollars. The Lollars were such a step up from Duncans it was ridiculous. Still have some guitars with Lollars. Just went to Manlius because they were more reasonably priced.

Are those Manlius puppies actually cheaper than SD's? Quick, everybody buy enough to last you a lifetime. These guys are bound to be sued, bought, or both.
Maybe when I have enough to buy a Les Paul.....
