I have installed a 3 way pup selector on a Jazz base . In the center position with both pups on the volume is reduced . Why is that happening ? More importantly what can be done to change this effect and still get pup selection ?

Is it possible that they are out of phase? That's my guess.

We may need to know a bit more about what exactly you did.
My first guess would be that you accidentally reversed the leads on one of the pickups so they're out of phase.

denny,
The Jazz Bass wires it's pickups in parallel. On a regular six-string guitar, this combo is known to slightly reduce the overall volume level, empahsis on the slightly. On a bass, the reduction is much more pronounced. As you've noted.
The easy solution would be to wire the pups in series. That's known to increase the output a bit, and on a bass, you'll probably describe the new sound as "more punch.... much more punch!" ;D
