say I record guitar straight into the puter (via impedance matching preamp) and I leave my tone knob on 10. What gain/freq/Q/shape should I use to emulate the tone knob after the fact?

The action of the Tone control is fairly complex. It's mostly the cable capacitance until you get down toward 0 where the tone cap comes into play, but the inductance of the pickup is involved as well.
You don't need to know that, though. An LPF with cutoff somewhere between 1-4KHz and a Q or slope between 1 and 2 should get you there. At this point it doesn't really matter what the guitar actually would have sounded like with Tone down. All that matters is that it sounds good in the end.
If you want it to sound exactly like the guitar with Tone down then you should turn down the Tone before you record. The TapeOp stance is generally that it's best to get things right at the source if at all possible. Of course, that's always tempered by the true TapeOp mantra: "If it sounds good, it is good!"

Cool, yeah. I'm doing some testing with straight guitar -> Guitar Rig and guitar->Vox Tonelab. And next I'm going to do some 're-amping' via Tonelab. So, in the GR and ReAmp scenarios, it seems to make some sense to record at full tone for full flexibility later.
So far, for dirty sounds, the Tonelab sounds way way better than GuitarRig. There's just a thickness that GR cant seem to replicate. OTOH, I'm getting a pretty nice clean sound from GR.
