Buy enough clamps, and you could have spent the same money for a cheapie used pickup! And a book press is nice, but it's a one trick pony. A pickup, on the other hand...... Me and her have been discussing trading in both our cars for either an S.U.V., or a dual cab pickup. We've got kids so cab space is an issue for us. Especially since her oldest son is 6'4'' , and we're both 5'11''.

You live in Alabama and you don't own a truck? I wouldn't broadcast that or they'll deport you...
And sg is right, the book press will not exert enough force to bond the body to the top cap. However, a used pickup truck will do, the trick...

l don't have access to a pickup but she's got an all metal body and frame, '92 dodge dynasty and its pretty hefty, would that work? and should it be parked on it length wise or width wise???

That'll do it. And always park it with the grain.

Ok thanks, lf this build goes well i'll be saving up to do one with a wenge body, bocote top, and a 3 layer strip of walnut and bocote down the middle with a clear satin finish.

l actually got to go to lowes yesterday, and nearly scored a 1-1/2'' thick round table covered in mold and a piece broke off for a $1, the employee helping me saw it and pulled it off the shelf to dispose of it and said l could leave with it for a dollar, and he wasn't joking either, only problem l had no money at all. And at least l found out they'll precut the big stuff now, cause l found a 1-1/2" x12"x12' pine board 'untreated', and that pine tele entered my mind and said ''build me'' ...

lpf3 about your pine tele body, out of curiosity what where the dimensions of the block you cut it from??? and where did you get It was 1 3/4" thick (more on that in a minute) by approx. 13"- 13 1/2" wide by about 8' long. This plank: I cut it into these 3 one-piece blanks. The end had a nasty split in it so I'll have to work that a bit & make a 2- piece body out of that ; so it was a total of 4 bodies plus about 12" left for finish testing or whatever. I got it at a hardwood store in Riverside, Ca.- about 20- 30 minutes from me, called Reel Lumber Service. It was 17 board feet @ $3.18 per bf; all told $54.06. About $13.50 per body- that's why I told you not to buy "tonewood". About hardwood measurements......... They don't go by the terms 1X6 or 2x6 etc. The thickness is measured and sold in increments of 1/4 " . A 1x is called 4/4; it's actually 3/4 of an inch after milling but you pay the call size price. A full 1 inch board is actually sold as 5/4, and so on. A body blank that measures 1 3/4" is sold as 8/4 - see? 8/4 is 2 inches and after milling you get 1 3/4. They don't specify the width either, you wouldn't go to a hardwood store & ask for a 2 x 6. The reason is that it comes from the mill as SL1E- straight line 1 edge. The other edge may still have bark on it & sometimes the width will vary several inches along the length of the board. In this case the guy who tallies the board feet will measure it somewhere in the middle so the price is kind of a happy medium. Of course if you're a regular customer and/or are cool to deal with they'll measure it on the narrow side for ya. Last but not least, the board also comes from the mill as S2S- or surfaced 2 sides. That's why you get 1/4" less than the call size- when they run it thru the planer in order to surface both sides , some of that board went to be with Jesus. So when you get the wood they sell at the home improvement stores they fix it up nice & you get S4S- surfaced 4 sides & you get a nice 1x4 or 1x6 or whatever. This is reflected in the price. OK so you want to know about plywood. The nice plywood; the kind we use for cabinet boxes & drawers & stuff is usually at least 5 ply or even better, 7 ply. That's 5 or 7 layers of wood with no (or a minimum of) voids in the plies. (Plys?) Anyway- the edges finish up nice & smooth that will need some, but not too much prep to make them look smooth in the finish. And it will have a veneer on at least one if not both sides, It can be pretty pricey depending on the veneer........ Maple plywood costs more than Oak and so on. The plywood you'll (usually) find at the home stores might only be 3 ply. 3 ugly plys with voids that you can't see until you cut it & find that there's no wood just behind the bridge. Or wherever. What you save in money you'll definitely spend in anger, bad language, and hate crimes. AND don't even think about buying anything thicker than 3/4"- if you can afford that you might just as well get solid lumber anyway. OK. So I've been following this thread (albeit silently) and have this advice: Forget about 1x this or 2x that & gluing it this way and that- you are setting yourself up to fail. Nuttin' personal. Somewhere within driving distance of your house there must be a hardwood store, I mean there's gotta be finish carpenters around who use this stuff. Find it. Get a nice piece of wood & start there. Baby Steps. You don't need to care about your wiring options just yet. We will gladly help you make a body. The right way. And then we'll help with the next step - till you're done. One more thing, the most important. Every tool you use in this endeavour is stronger and faster than any man- and has no conscience. Don't cut your parts off OK? Peace. -lpf3

Jeez- I had so many punctuation & spelling edits that I'm just starting a new post. I shoulda been more clear about what to look for at the wood store. You'll want to get 8/4 material. If you can't find a piece wide enough for your body, get a piece that's double the length. Cut it in half like so...... And glue 'em together. Some yard don't want to cut a piece off of a long plank- they want you to buy the whole thing. Some (my place does this) will cut some off for you as long as they have at least 8 feet left to sell. It's easy to get just enough for your project. -lpf3

Earlier this evening l tried ioffer.com with a few impessive results, basswood, cherry, ash, and even pine body blanks under $80. l'll take that info you posted and lurk around, see what turns up. l live in a small p!$$ ant town with only one hardware store, VERY FEW places that use real hardwoods its all gone to presswood, and partical board i'll be heading out of town to find it. l'm just about tempted to say screw it and cut a tree down and make my own sized lumber.

Well, Double Springs, AL is in the William B. Bankhead National Forest... Just find a tree knocked down from the recent storms, chain it to the back of the old Dodge Dynasty and roll. You take enough corners on the way home and you can debark it as well...

In the U.P., where I'm originally from, stealing timber off Public Lands represents a goodly chunk of the local economy. ;D Particularly in the winter, when the summer seasonal work dries up . . .
But as your attorney, I must counsel against it. $80 for a swamp ash body blank will be cheap by comparison to what that could cost you!

However, the National Forest system will sell you a deadwood license for next to nothing to clear downed trees.
When I lived in NC I paid $15.00 a year and I could pull out as much dead wood as I could carry. I used it mainly for gathering firewood, but if you catch a hardwood tree that just went down...and you get it before the bugs do...you'll wind up with enough lumber to build an ark.
And I know AL is littered with sawmills. You chain saw the logs to a manageable size and they'll saw them up for a case of beer and a couple of bucks. That was the going rate in 1999, so check your local mill for current rates. Once they get to know you they'll toss your lumber in with theirs in the kiln and when you pick it up it's just about ready to go.
As your non-counselor I advise you to check this option out, since the supply of moldy tables is a limited...

Yeah l gotta side with newey there, but l can't honestly say l haven't been tempted. l do know of a logging company out in bankhead but its fresh cut, undried, and l doubt they'd do small individual sales or scrap hand outs. l'd still like to use nontraditional woods, the biggest problems i've came across are not thick enough and not wide enough, l can get the walnut l wanted for around $57 its 1.75'' thick which is right but only 5.75'' wide and 36'' long i'd still wind up gluing and clamping for a 2pc. 1

now about 18 miles north is haleyville it has 3-4 hardware stores and about 5-6 lumber yards, now the hard part is convincing her to take me up there cause my car is at my grandmothers house, lN haleyville. luckily its grocery week so i'll try some sweet talking tonight!!! l might wind up getting the wood to build it cheap but it'll still cost me about $75-$100 more for a new summer wardrobe and swimwear. But as long as there's negligee's i'm happy so it all works out in the end. ;D

Alright i'm seriously upset with the alabama library system. Not a single book on luthiery or instrument construction in the entire state library registery system 'ANYWHERE' so lts off to frostwire for me on source material from now on. Unless anyone has a few they wouldn't mind parting with, l'd even pay to ship it.
