Well, in just 2 years less then it took Stalin to implement his Plan, I finally finished Project #1.
As you can see, she’s red with a maple neck…and mystery wood…more on that later…
She started life as a Washburn guitar…until my buddy’s dogs got a hold of it. When he told me the story I said I’d take it rather then make firewood out of it.
When the body arrived it was worse than I suspected. They ate the horns, all around the strap button on the bottom and most of the neck pocket… I spent a good 2-3 weeks trying to figure out what I could salvage, what I could rebuild…and what was going to be cut off and re-shaped.
Anyway’s…she’s got a DiMarzio YJM in the neck; a Kent Armstrong closed Cool Rails in the middle and a Rockfield Zebra PAF in the bridge.
There’s One Master 500K Volume and one Master 500K Tone with a standard 5-way switch configuration. The two switches between the volume and tone are series\parallel switches for the middle and bridge pickups. The neck pickup is just wired in straight series, no bells or whistles.
The small switch by the 5-way is a neck on switch. The bottom switch is ChrisK’s Free Woman Tone with .047 and .022 in series to give you the .015 in the switches middle position.
The finish is just red automotive lacquer in a heavy one color burst to the wood, then multiple clear lacquer clear coats. Sanded with 400, 800 and 1200 wet or dry, rubbing compound, polishing compound and swirl remover.
The original neck for this guitar had truss rod issues. So, for $31.00 I scored this Mighty Mite neck on eBay. The nut needed some work, but all in all the frets were good and it’s straight. The original Tele headstock wasn't making it, so I sort of re-cut it...sort of looks like a Peavey headstock, don't it... The finish on the neck is just poly. Matte on the fingerboard, satin on the back and gloss on the headstock.
Since spent so much time burying the decal in clear, I tried to get a close-up. Probably should have done this before I put the string on...
The frets were just buffed out with a Dremel tool polishing wheel and some rubbing compound.
The strings are Webstrings flatwounds 11-48.
Sound files can be found here in the Sound Samples, along with a breakdown of the 17 available tones. I haven’t really played a guitar since I was 19…so if this sounds like a durge, I apologize in advance…
Now...what about that mystery wood. In the interests of being an instigator, here's a few close-ups of the front and back...ignore the dust on the front...
Try and make a guess based on the sound files and these images as to what type of "tonewood" the mystery wood actually is...
This project started as a dare, turned into a rescue\experiment. That's all the hints I'm givin' ya...
