Define useful...
You're asking someone who is finding out his bass tone is seriously out of touch with current rock styles...based on conversations with 20 something co-workers...
But back to the question. From my 30 odd years playing bass, series and parallel are about as far as useful goes for 97% of what you'll play on the bass in a band setting. Even if you do take solos in the band, the bass solo is less the 3% of the evening...so let that be your guide.
I've never done out of phase on a bass, but from what it sounds like on a guitar I can only imagine that you'd need the Ubergain knob on the amp to prevent being lost in the mix somewhere...
But hey, in 30 years all I've ever used was a flange and chorus pedal...what do I know...
Your mileage may vary...
If it were me, I'd look at a baritone guitar for that range...

"Funk-fusion" here: soundcloud.com/roadtonever/spacethumpHaven't used it extensively and only at home but I've imagined it might help when having trouble cutting through, assuming the amp can cope with the boosting required, output is low. Adding a cap to either pickup lets some lows from the other pickup shine through and is essential IMO, else it's not a bass instrument anymore, I use .033uF.
