So I splurged on a "blem" Xavier XV-300. It's their SG copy, with a real set neck and a very nice guitar. I can't say for sure why they marked it down as much as they did. There's a very small flaw in the finish on the "drivers side" corner of the headstock, but not anything that bugs me.
It plays very nicely. No sharp fret ends or anything. The neck is beefy, but not nearly as baseball batty as the Epiphones I've tried. Was set up nicely right out of the box, but with cheap dinky strings. I have a bit of a heavy hand, and am used to thicker strings, so I was having some intonation problems.
So I swapped out for Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky (12-56). While I was at it, I installed my new GK3 hex pickup on the included bracket hanger thing. That's when the buzzing started.
It's only on the D string, and is worst when I play the open note. At first I thought that I had the GK too close, but it didn't stop when I temporarily removed it. If I touch the string near the saddle on the stopbar side the buzzing goes away. I tried (not too hard) jamming some foam in there, but that didn't help.
Anybody got any ideas why this might be happening or what I can try to fix it? I was thinking about replacing the saddles with graphite (love them on my LP!) but I want to sort this out first.
Thanks guys.

OK, I didn't want to leave you without a response for a month as we did on your last post. But if a piece of foam wedged in there didn't solve it, I'm at a total loss for answers. Just a light touch, or are you pressing hard enough to alter the string tension by any appreciable amount? Got a spare D string around? Admittedly grasping at straws here, but I'm thinking maybe a bum string. Or is it possible that the ball end isn't seated properly? Again, not likely but I'm grasping here . . .

So this afternoon I messed with it some more and find it seems to be the saddle itself rattling. Temporary fix is to wedge a tiny bit of plastic between the D and G saddles. Hopefully replacing with graphite will fix it altogether. Still curious what might have caused it.

Is this a wired Tune-o-Matic. or are the adjusting screws for the saddles running through machined holes?
It could be breakover into the bridge, a bad saddle, too small a groove for the string gauge or on a wired bridge the adjusting screw may not be secure...or none of the above...
Is the stop tailpiece all the way down?
Is there enough room to intonate the string if you reversing the saddle?
