got the mockingbird. played it at practice and on some tracks for our new split ep i thought system out of phase would be 100% necessary, but i can get by without it if need be neck humbucker is nowhere near muddy and i tend to play most stuff on it, so i don't know what i should do with it all i'm 100% happy with it, but us nutz can't keep well enough alone so... what have you found most useful using up to four DPDT push/pull pots?

I find there is a difference between the schemes that I might like to work out, with smart-butt phasing and multi combo options etc, and what I actually use when I play. These days, I’d rather have fewer options for a simpler layout. On an HH guitar, the most useful stuff I find are the coil cuts, particularly a full coil cut at the neck and one coil bypassed by a cap at the bridge (a bit fuller sounding than simple coil cut). Pickups in series is a lot of fun too, usually with one or both pickups coil cut. Many folk like local parallel wiring, and its nice and very low noise, but given a choice I find single coil is a more interesting contrast to full series humbucker. I also very much like having the coil cut as part of the tone control turn, using the third tone pot lug. Single coil at 10, humbucker at 9 and below. With a simple pot, you can get nice solid full sized ones rthaer than the flimsy smaller tyoe that come on pp pots. A lot depends on the overall balance with the amp and speakers however. With some rigs, I’m searching for big deep sounds from the guitar to balance a shrill amp, and other times I want bright from the guitar due to a wooly sounding cab. For me, out of phase combos are never actually used, even though I have them on all my guitars. So my fav HH design, would be as on my LP, minus the phase switch. One switch for overall series parallel, probably a separate switch, and unswitched coil cuts as part of the tone controls. This is my LP: guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=schem&action=display&thread=4571John

I've never given this much thought, really. But I reckon overwound pickups with high inductance would lend themselves better to local parallel than Pafs. The advantage to parallel rather than split, is humcanceling when only one pickup is selected.
If you do splits, using the north from one pickup and the south from the other will give you humcanceling when both pickups are used together.
Humcanceling isn't the be all end all. But when you can have it, use it.
System parallel might be a bit much for two series connected "hot" HBs, but if they were both split, that ends up being the equivalent of one series HB with wide spacing. That might be nice.
Edit: had forgotten to say "hot". added.

these are ~8k dcr with alnico 2 magnets. so a lot closer to a paf than a duncan super distortion

In that case system parallel for one of the PP would be a good choice. Maybe splits for the other two. The fourth? Idk. Maybe a phase switch. Or maybe just use 3 switches. Just because you have a place to put 4 PPs doesn't mean you have to use 4.

Just because you have a place to put 4 PPs doesn't mean you have to use 4. Uh oh, the Beta Particle Bombarder is gonna revoke your Nutz Merit Badge for that one! Never forget his motto: The First Law of GNutz2: "Leave No Lug Unsoldered!" And of course, the obiligatory Brian May's Corollary: If there's room for it, then what's yer problem - put it in there! Note to JohnH: I can no longer find the image of Runewalker's guitar that Unklmickey photoshopped - have you got a copy, or know the thread where it's sitting?

pffft!
I'm an alpha male. Your puny beta particles are powerless against me.
However, I do have a fear of neuter-inos.

Just because you have a place to put 4 PPs doesn't mean you have to use 4. You might not wanna debate Runewalker about that particular point: Now if you don't have enough fingers to handle that, you could always settle for less, like CheshireCat did: HTH sumgai p.s. 'Sfunny you should mention the word puny, as that's the same thing The Bombarder's wife told me......

The first one is an obvious shoop, but the second one looks like it could be real.
