Here's a nice clip found on another forum. Its good, not only for hearing some of the variations that an LP can make with JP wiring, but also to watch some skillful playing of classic Zep:
cheers

Well, it makes a lot more sense when you hear the tones in context.
Nice find.

That does sound very good, and shows the possibilities of the JP mod.
However, was this mod not post-Zep? My impression was that JP had fairly clear "phases" in terms of recording guitars (in the non-electronic sense ...).
Tele for LZ1 LP for LZ2-4 A significant amount of Strat thereafter (along with the LP) Various Fender XII's, Danelectro's, etc.
Also, much is made of his OoP sound, and there are some very clear examples, but I'm not so sure about the outro solo on "The Ocean". Is that not just one of his straight middle position mixes?

Page went through a lot of different guitars for Zep's recordings ... But I imagine he wouldn't want to cart all of them around. I suspect his wiring mod may have evolved out of a need to 'have' those guitars without carrying them all around.
Maybe?

I suspect his wiring mod may have evolved out of a need to 'have' those guitars without carrying them all around. Much like many of us here, I imagine. Although in my case, unlike Jimmy's, it is due to a need to have those guitars without actually having them, if you see what I mean. So, any verdict on that solo in "The Ocean"?

Hey, what a great demo...he even has he JP hair and sideburns down!
The LP mod is cool, I have the 22 dual on mine and it is a nice thing to have and as you can see on this clip how it can make a les paul a very versatile guitar.
The 'rain song' is impressive for standard tuning too, I used to be able to play it a bit like that LOL.
As for 'the ocean' don't quite remember, when i looked up a clip he used a cocked wah on the solos, so go figure. It is more about the variety and of course on the records the tele and a bunch of other guitars featured highly.
I particularly liked that he demoed most of this clean, even the distorted bits could have been more crunch...but again, shows what the guitar can do and how these variances are more apparent when you can hear the guitar!
Page's stage work with the LP and Clapton's "Beano" era is what made me get a real LP when I was a teen and stick with it for a couple of decades. Even put two three way coil splitters in it to approximate the 'fender' sounds that were taking over in the late 70's.
I saw plant/page thing once and his LP trans-performance thing was pretty impressive too and influencing my dabbling in open tunings of late. A very impressive back catalogue too.
Music like this killed the attraction to things like metal and shred in a lot of ways I have to say, clean to crunch...but short of 'mush'!
