I keep noticing that some of my new pots have a little metal piece that sticks up from the side of the pot, preventing the pot from being mounted flush with the bottom of my pick guard. What is the purpose of this little "tag?" and should I be clipping them off as I've been doing to get a flush mount? Thanks.

The "tag" is meant to locate in a hole in a panel. This keeps the body of the pot from rotating, even if the mounting nut isn't tight. No problem clipping it off.

I do the same with those tabs. It is a "locating tab" or "indexing tab"
They are on there because, for certain applications, that tab would fit into a corresponding slot in the mounting panel to prevent the pot shell from rotating during use- so that the whole thing doesn't turn instead of the element turning alone.
