I have a question. I am working on an Ibanez guitar with three pickups and a 5 way switch. The guy wants to replace the bridge pickup with a regular humbucker, let's say for argument sake a Gibson. The Ibanez pup has three wires coming from it, Black, White, and Red. The Gibson has Black, Red, and the shielded wire. Normally the shield and black go to ground, and the red to the pot lug. The Ibanez pups wires go as follows, Black-ground, White to the switch, and Red to the switch. How would I wire the Gibson pup? Thank you in advance for your input.

Howdy weldaar, I'm just going to explain some things before someone with more experience can help you. By a Ibanez with three pickups and replacing the bridge pickup with a 'regular humbucker, so you mean the guitar is formatted as, HSH If it's the HSH combo, you are switching out the Ibanez bridge humbucker for a 'Gibson' bridge humbucker. Also, do you know what the model is that you are working with? I can only assume it is a typical HSH wiring scheme, but it could be different. --- Found something of use. I'm looking at DiMarzio's HSH config for this, You can find it here, www.dimarzio.com/support/wiring-diagrams#1-1-1-3Ibanez: White -> Switch Black -> Ground lug of Vpot. Red -> (Green + Red) -> Switch Bare -> Ground "Gibson": Black -> Red -> Bare -> Ground The problem here, sorry it took some time, is that the Dimarzio/Ibanez HSH configuration has coil split modes at every other position. For this to happen, the pickup needs to have 3 or 4 conductors. The Red wire that goes to the switch on your Ibanez is the wire that enables you to 'split' the humbucker into separate coils. See, On the 'gibson' pickup, as they are originally in Les Pauls, aren't designed for this coil split mode, so they only built then with 2 conductors. Now on to the fun stuff. You are able to convert the 2 conductor humbucker into a 3/4 conductor one. I'll have to find that link though. I'll be back. See here: guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=reference&action=display&thread=6021You'll need to make sure that you have a multimeter to check that you are working with the right conductors.

The Ibanez has three wires, yes. Black to back of vol pot, White to switch and red also to switch, but a different lug. The Humbucker has Black, Red and the bare shielded wire. I am guessing the three wires on the Ibanez is some kind of coil splitter, correct? Would the red from the Hum, go to the white lug on the switch? There is a link for converting 2 conductor to 3/4? That would be great. Thank you so much. Actually, I don't want to have to disect this pickup, it is actually a WCR Goodwood. If this isn't possible, then I will forgo this project.

Weldaar- Hello and Welcome to G-Nutz2!While dissecting HBs is certainly possible, if it's a classic p/u you're right to think twice. Also, if the pup in question has been epoxied or potted in some fashion it can become a true Battle Royale . . . Best to just get a more "modern" HB for coil splitting. long813 has you on track as far as the wiring goes. The original Ibby scheme has what I call the "progressive coil switching" scheme, the coils are selected in succession with a SC in the middle. Ibanez uses a switch called an OTAX switch to do this. I have an S470 that has this same switching.

So there is no way to use a 2 conductor pickup with this guitar besides dismantling it?

So there is no way to use a 2 conductor pickup with this guitar besides dismantling it? Oh there is always a way! But, you won't get the original wiring. In the simplest method, you could wire the replacement HB as SD suggests (below). This though, will not give you that coil split in position 4 - I'm also not sure what pos.4 would give you as I am not familiar with the Ibby 5 ways. In pos.5 you'd get the full humbucker. www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=HSH_1v_1t_5wOthers will have a more elegant solution no doubt. So, I'd wait for their input.

I see the diagram. Not sure if my friend would care about the coil split. The diagram shows red green white and black wires. The HB I have has only black and red, what diagram would I use for those wires?

The HB I have has only black and red, what diagram would I use for those wires? Checked with WCR just to make sure (can never be to sure) www.wcrguitar.com/Install.htmlWCRRed: Hot Black: Ground Bare: Ground Seymour DuncansRed & White: Ignore Black: Hot Green: Ground Bare: Ground So to compare to the diagram from SD, using the WCR wiring: Red -> switch Black -> Ground on pot Bare -> Ground on pot Now again, bc I don't know the Ibby switches that well, the 5way SD has may operate differently than the diagram from DiMarzio. Someone should be able to clear that up for you. Also, there may need to be some other modifications on the pos.4 of the switch. I'll check in again after I sleep and look over the switching if it hasn't been answered yet. EDIT: I saw that that pickup is quite pricey! Yes, with the money spent on it, I would not be down to open it up.

The DiMarzio diagram is shown using an import-style 5-way switch. This is, internally, the same as the classic Strat switch, in that positions 2 and 4 are not independently wire-able, but give you parallel combinations of 1 + 3 and 3 + 5, respectively. The SD diagram uses a regular USA-style Strat switch, although it's a bit stylized on the drawing. The Ibanez OTAX is a 2P5T switch, which is functionally just like half of a Superswitch™ the lugs simply are run vertically along the sides instead of along the bottom as on the SS. I believe Ibby uses this switch mostly because of thin bodies like my S470. By not having the wiring along the bottom side of the switch, but coming up to the sides instead, the cavity depth needed is lessened. ChrisK's diagram above perfectly displays the switch logic of this item; it's even color-coded . . . The DM diagram does this same "progressive coil" thing with a more generic switch. One pole switches the HBs while the other pole deals with the coil cuts. As far as what to do at position 4, the Ibby switch is independently wire-able at that position. But there's not much you can do with a 2-wire (plus shield) HB. The obvious option is HB + Middle SC. You could also run the HB through a cap at that position, or perhaps put the HB out-of-phase. But that's about it.

GuitarForce. Kevin Taylor makes these. This one is called the Erupter. I've had it in my LP before. Black is ground along with the bare wire, I tied the Green and White together as I didn't want to split the coils. The Red would be hot.

I found this on his website and based off your description, yes. Parallel Humbucker:Red + Black = Hot White + green + shield = ground But, newey brought up a good point. The switch given in the DiMarzio wiring layout is not the same as the one on the S series. So, could you tell us which model you are working with?
