I thought this might be of help to some readers. I prepared it for a forum on which I was a member years ago. It was dedicated to the Ensoniq PARIS system which is what I was using in my studio at the time. Essentially, many getting started in recording never really know at what frequencies they should be cutting (or boosting, but usually cutting) for particular instruments. I created this table for a basic rock, jazz or dance band to help aspiring recording engineers to get some idea of where to start. It's not in any way complete with only five instruments included, but it's a place to start.
I hope it helps!
Instrument EQ Ranges
Drums Fundamentals 250 - 350 Hz. Head attack 1 kHz. Stick & Head Crack 5K - 8 kHz.
Cymbal Fundamentals 500 - 800 Hz. Cymbal Shimmer 10 - 15 kHz.
Kick Fundamental 100 - 150 Hz. Kick Harmonics 3 kHz. & 7 kHz. Snare Fundamental 1 - 2 kHz. Snare Harmonics 4 - 5 kHz. Snare Wires 6 kHz.
Bass Guitar Fundamentals 40 - 100 Hz. Lower Harmonics 800 Hz. Hi Harmonics 2 - 3 kHz.
Acoustic Guitar Fundamentals 250 - 600 Hz. Pick 1 - 3 kHz. Harmonics 8 - 14 kHz.
Electric Guitar Fundamentals 350 - 800 Hz. Pick 1 - 3 kHz. Harmonics 3 - 6 kHz. Shimmer 8 - 14 kHz.
