I need to replace the 5-way switch on my brother's old Ibanez RG2EX1 so I can give it to a friend who's learning guitar. Unfortunately, my spare Strat 5-way switch doesn't fit into the place. Is there a special profile for this kind of switch? Can someone point me to a switch that will fit?

I am not familiar with this Ibanez model, but it probably uses the Ibanez OTAX style switch. These switches have the lugs to the sides, meaning less room is needed under the switch for the connections. More info can be found here: Off-shore lever switchesPage down for the OTAX. If what you tried to get to fit was a US-style Oak Grigsby switch, you may find that an import-style Strat switch will fit. Otherwise, as GD suggests, buy the Ibby part.

Allparts doesn't give any dimensions for the switch (although I'm sure that info is available a'web), and I don't know how deep your cavity is. You'll need to measure it, then find a 5-way switch to fit, if possible.
I suspect an import-style Strat switch will fit, but it's my suspicion and your wallet . . .
If the numbers don't add up, the OTAX style will fit. My Ibanez S470 uses that switch, and that axe has the thinnest body I've ever seen.

Tread carefully, Geo. Ibanez made some unique switches. It might not be just a question of finding a switch that fits. It might also be necessary to find one that functions the same. If this is a HH guitar with a 5-way switch, it's likely to use the SC2502N switch (Ibanez part number 3PS1SC5). You could mimic the switching functions using an OTAX, but the wiring would be very different. Does your switch look like this?

As far as I can tell, that's exactly what it looks like. Not a simple switch?

Or have my meds gone into overdrive.... again? Your meds are okay. I'm just an optical conclusion.

As far as I can tell, that's exactly what it looks like. Not a simple switch? Check the number. If it says 2502N, it's not simple at all. It's built to do some pretty cool things. In positions 1, 3, and 5 you get what you would expect from a HH configuration with a simple 3-way switch. Bridge HB, Both HBs, Neck HB. But in positions 2 and 4 you get things that normally take a superswitch and some fancy wiring. One coil from each HB in parallel, the two coils of the neck HB in parallel. If it has a different number, we can probably find out what it does.

Two steps ahead as always! reTrEaD was right, the switch is labeled 2502N at the top and has a 4 at the bottom. (Top being the end with the contacts.)
