Hello,
I did a quick search of the forums but couldn't find a schematic for my setup (most are the typical 3 knob strats setups, and I'm not sure how o adjust the schematic for the missing knob).
I have a HSS guitar with a 5 way switch, 1 volume, 1 tone that is a push/pull, and I would like to wire it so that when it is down I'm in normal humbucker mode, and when pulled up, tap the coils. (or split the coils - I'd actually like to try both to see which I like better)
I already tried based on schematics I found online, but I think that I did something wrong because when the push / pull is pulled, the neck pickup sounds thin and phase-y - but it seems like it shouldn't be affected at all if I had wired it correctly.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
d.

Hi djeans, This Seymour Duncan diagram seems to pretty much as you describe: HSS 1v 1t p/pWhat it does is split or cut the coils to a single coil. Tapping a coil means connecting part way through a coil, which is not usual since it means special provisions when winding. Other things people do to humbu kers include putting the two coils in parallel, which is bright but a bit fuller sounding than just one coil, and its humcancelling. Another is to partly bypass one coil via a cap or resistor, which keeps a bit more low end in the sound

Awesome - Thank you.
If I wanted to wire so that it was series / parallel, what changes would I need to make to that diagram?

To do series/parallel instead of coil cut, you can use the same type of push/pull switch. Wire the humbucker as in this diagram: humbucker series/parallelThen, where the black wire goes to the volume pot in the above diagram, instead take it to the 5-way switch in the previous diagram. Some watch-its with any of these schemes, particularly if you have a mixed set of pickups, include getting the phase correct between humbucker and singles, if you do the single coil split - getting humcancelling in position 2, and also, using the right wire colour codes for the Hb since different makers use different ones. It is always possible to sort this out though, but it may mean swapping wires around, and there are tests you can do to get it right first time. What pickups do you have?

Right now, I have a Bill Lawrence USA L500XL in the bridge, but I'm thinking of switching it for a Bill & Becky L500XL - and the middle and neck pickups are old EMG Select. Nothing special, but I actually like the tone of the neck pickup in this guitar.
