Hi,
I'm new to wiring guitars myself, this will actually be the first guitar that I have wired myself, my uncle recently bought me a guitar to use for the purposes of learning how to wire and setup my own guitars, the guitar originally came stock with two humbuckers, 1 volume, 1 tone and a three way blade switch.
I have already made some changes to the guitar as in I've drilled out and installred a second pot for a second tone control, so the guitar is now 2 humbuckers, 1 volume, 2 tones, and a five way switch - more on this, so I originally followed this wiring diagram from the Seymour Duncan website:
And to be honest I found that it was a really useless wiring diagram, as in the switching options was not intuitive at all, I was hoping that the above diagram would give me the following switching options:
1, Bridge
2, Single outer Coil on neck pickup - the coil closest to the bridge on the neck pickup, and the bridge pickup
3, Bridge pickup and Neck pickup
4, Neck pickup and outer coil of the bridge pickup - the coil on the bridge pickup furthest from the bridge
5, Neck pickup
Instead god knows what I got, all the switch positions work and produce a sound I just have no idea what they are and what is being used in what position, it was a great idea that Seymour Duncan had to put up all these wiring diagrams without bothering to tell you what it is that they do to your guitar.
So I came across this diagram on this forum, that uses a three way blade switch:
Now I'm assuming that position 1 is the bridge pickup, position 2 is both pickups, and position 3 is the neck pickup, now as things go, unless I can figure out how to get the first diagram to behave in the manner that I was expecting and hoping for, I plan on using the second diagram with the three way switch, and forget about coil splitting for now, however I plan to make a few modifications to it, namely the tone pots will be 500k no load pots, plus I will be using a 47uf cap on each of the tone pots, and the volume control will be a 300k pot.
Now the problem I'm having understanding the second wiring diagram is that all the wires used in it are the same colour, so I'm assuming that the black wire coming out of the humbuckers on the second diagram - the one with the three way switch, is the same wire as the black wire - north start according to Seymour Duncan wiring colour codes, on the first wiring diagram that I posted, am I correct in asuming this?
If not I would really appreciate it if somebody would please correct me, if somebody here feels generous enough to help me work out how to use a five way switch to achieve the following wiring options:
I would also greatly appreciate the help - I would need some really simplified idiot proof instructions though as thgis is my first time wiring a guitar, I really can not over state how much I would like to wire my own guitar, this might be a difficult choice for a first attempt at wiring my own guitar, but I honestly have no other guitars that need to have their pickups changed on, I should nention that I am also considering adding a momentary push to break switch to have a momentary kill switch on the guitar, I'm undecided on this yet, but I have a fairly good idea on how to do that.
Thanks a lot for any help with this little project of mine that people are willing to give me, and apologies for my first thread being a plea for help.
