As I flipped channels between the different New Years Eve celebrations going on in North America I was noticing that most guitar players in the various bands performing in New Year's Eve 2018 events played Fender Jazzmasters.
By far I saw more of these than any other guitar. There were a few Telecasters, one non-Gibson flying V, and a few Stratocasters here and there, but not in great numbers. I saw no Gibson electric guitars at all.
Did this appear noteworthy to anyone else?

bm2,
Your observations don't surprise me. When you're the best, the rest will eventually figure it out. Like surf music, it just keeps coming back from the supposedly dead, kicking asss and not even bothering to take names - it doesn't have to, it's old enough to judge quite nicely*, TYVM.
Off and on, I've owned (and sometimes imitated a player of) a Jazzmaster. In fact, after a short rental period of a cheap knock off to prove to my father that I'd stick with it, my first offically owned axe was a 1962 Jazzmaster, serial number L10442. I don't know where that thing is now, I lost it during transit while in the Army in 1966. But my lastest rig is probably about 95% as good, so I'm not gonna kick up a fuss about it.

* Hat tip to a certan cynical bass player for the snappy verbiage!

Maybe the JM is making a bit of a comeback. 30 years ago, if you said "name me someone who plays a Jazzmaster", the only two answers you would have been likely to get would have been Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth.

newey,,
Probably shouldn't be too quick to blow off Elvis Costello, who predates your 30 years by a bit:
He talks about his gear over the years, but focuses on the JM in this video:

Especially not, given that I saw him open for Steely Dan a couple of years ago, playing one. Should have remembered that.
OK, so that's 3 we can name . . .Still not very many, as I'm sure we could all rattle off a dozen or more names from the same era who played Strats exclusively, or LPs, etc.
