Members may remember my previous year-end quizzes from several years ago. I stopped doing them because it was getting harder and harder to formulate questions that were not easily google-able (most things have to be visual), and also because ashcatlt usually won. But here's a quick 8 questions for our 13th anniversary. First one to PM me with correct answers will receive a (small) prize sometime in the near future. Guests are welcome to participate, too, but you'll have to register to be able to PM me the answers. 1) You wire the circuit depicted in this schematic. What have you built? 2) What component is represented by this schematic symbol? 3) Whose father was the best man at Les Paul's 1949 wedding to singer Mary Ford? 4) Nowadays, one can photoshop pretty much anything. But what about this picture? Is it real or just a figment of someone's twisted imagination? And, what are the necks, from left to right? 5) What is this? 6) Who was this man and what is the event that brought him to that stage? 7) So, for what exactly would you have been auditioning if you had gone to this audition? 8) Sir Elton John has always been known for his flashy costumes worn onstage. This one, however, has a name/title associated with it. What is it?

Still plenty of time to get your quiz answers to me. Only one set of answers rec'd so far, and those from a staff member who is not eligible to win (I'll still score the staff answers, though- might get you bragging rights!)

Newey, as a staff member I can't win the prize but I'm thinking of participating just for the fun of it. However, I am a bit concerned. If I don't get a passing grade, are ya gonna revoke my official GuitarNutz membership card or something?

I did talk newey out of doling out a moderate lashing with a wet low-E string. I convinced him that we didn't wanna leave any marks, the other members might get ideas.

I think a definite ending date is missing, yes? If so, then when are the final results going to be announced?

QUIZ Key
1) a Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face (but any answer that had "distortion pedal" or similar wording was deemed acceptable).
2) a Bi-color LED. JohnH had an alternate answer which I also scored as correct- he said "A light emitting diode back-to-back with a normal diode". He convinced me that was equally a good reading of it.
3) Steve Miller's parents were the best man and maid of honor at the 1949 wedding of Les Paul and Mary Ford. Les Paul was also Steve's godfather.
4) This one was a bit tricky. Such a guitar does exist, it is real (and is playable), but the picture I posted of it has definitely been altered from the actual guitar. This answer was therefore scored in thirds:
a) One-third point for any answer that said the picture was photoshopped (It was).
b) One-third point for any answer that said it's a real guitar (It basically is).
c) One third point for getting the necks correct (and in order).
The necks are (L to R): Tenor ukelele, mandolin, 6-string guitar, bass guitar, fretless bass guitar, 12-string guitar, baritone guitar, 7-string guitar. ("ukelele" by itself was scored correct, I didn't hold anyone to specifying "tenor".
Probably a couple hundred bucks to restring the thing!
5) A Theremin, which is unique in that it is the only musical instrument that is played without touching the instrument. (Well, I guess an argument could be made for "voice" there).
6) Cleveland DJ Alan Freed, at the first "Moondog Coronation Ball", generally regarded as the first Rock and Roll concert.
7) The Monkees TV Show. Mike Nesmith allegedly walked in wearing his wool cap, plopped down in a seat and said: "How long is this gonna take?". They hired him on the spot.
8) "The Champ", from the movie "Tommy". Virtually everyone said "The Pinball Wizard", but that's just plain wrong. Tommy, "that deaf, dumb, and blind boy" is the Pinball Wizard.
Two staff members called me out on this, noting that the movie credits call 'ol Elton as "The Pinball Wizard". Again, that's just wrong. He's the Champ, and all his fans in the photo are waving signs to prove it.[/font]
AND THE WINNER IS: LEADFINGERS! He scored 5 2/3 points out of 8, and is the winner as he was the only non-staff member to participate. SO, let that be a lesson to all, leadfingers will get a nice little something in the mail (once he PMs me a mailing address).
Several Staff Members also played, but I had declared them ineligible as they had a bit of advance access and thus unfair advantage.
Among the staff, reTrEaD gets bragging rights for getting them all right. YogiB and JohnH were both close behind with 7 of 8.
RT also gets the award for the most creative answers. I would invite him to repost his answer "Key" hereunder, as it's much better than my "official" one above!

Credit was given for simply "Alan Freed" as the answer. The photo was labelled as from the Moondog Coronation ball but you may well be right that it was a different venue. The old Cleveland Arena was where the Cleveland Barons minor league hockey team played- now long gone. But, there is an Alan Freed historic marker at the site of the old WJW studios. Of course, the marker doesn't mention that, after moving to NYC, Freed was disgraced in the infamous Payola scandal of the late 1950's. Cleveland history tends to gloss over that part of the story. . .

I had fun doing that. Every bit as much in segueing with horrible puns as writing the answers.

Arrogance and Pretentiousness
I sent the contents below to Newey in a PM entitled simply: The Key (my answers are in the spoilers)
The Key. Okay, maybe I don't have them all correct but I might earn the most style points.
1) You wire the circuit depicted in this schematic. What have you built? You've built a reason to go buy your first razor because you now have a Fuzz Face. The 100k resistor between the emitter of Q2 and the base of Q1 is the strongest clue. Here's an article by RG Keen which might be of interest. www.geofex.com/Article_Folders/fuzzface/fffram.htm
2) What component is represented by this schematic symbol? I can shed some light on that one. It's a bi-color LED Which of the two LEDs emits light, depends on which end is connected to positive. Of course a third color (the combination of the two colors) can be achieved by applying AC. In practice a limiting resistor is used in series to prevent small changes in voltage resulting in large changes in current.
3) Whose father was the best man at Les Paul's 1949 wedding to singer Mary Ford? No need to get on a big ol' Jet Airliner and search the world for the answer, he was Livin' in the USA at the time. The answer to whose father was the best man can be answered if you know whose mother was the matron of honor. Some people call him the Space Cowboy, some call him the Gangster of Love, some people call Maurice, but everyone calls him Steve Miller.
4) Nowadays, one can photoshop pretty much anything. But what about this picture? Is it real or just a figment of someone's twisted imagination? And, what are the necks, from left to right? Perhaps (basically) real but also photoshopped. You might be tempted to call the Dream Police because it looks like some Sith Lord extracted an idea from Rick Nielsen's brain whilst he slept. But hang up that phone Young Padawan. The Rock Ock was commissioned by The National Guitar Museum and has a Mandolin, Tenor Ukelele, 6-String Guitar, Fretless Bass, Fretted Bass, 12-String Guitar, Baritone Guitar, and 7-String Guitar. (in that order) Did someone do a photoshop number on the pic for the quiz or is that an second model? The order for the Mandolin and Tenor Uke is flipped as is the order for the Fretted and Fretless.
5) What is this? Oh joy!
I dunno whether to call this "When East Meets West" or "What goes around comes around". Patented in 1928 the ætherphone/etherphone was invented by a Soviet inventor, Léon Theremin. However we in the west referred to that device as a Theremin.
The quiz picture is an updated version known as the Etherwave-Theremin, from MoogMusic founded by American, Robert Moog. Incidentally, it's available in kit form. Totally Nutz.
6) Who was this man and what is the event that brought him to that stage? Seek the truth for it shall set you (Alan) Free(d). Moon-Puppy, have Sherman set the Wayback Machine to March 21, 1952 That appears to be the Moondog Coronation Ball in Cleveland. A(n)(in)famous event, essentially the first major rock and roll concert. There was room for ten thousand people but apparently over twice that many tickets were sold. It went on for an hour or two, then the disgruntled crowd outside stormed the doors and the result was chaos.
7) So, for what exactly would you have been auditioning if you had gone to this audition?
8) Sir Elton John has always been known for his flashy costumes worn onstage. This one, however, has a name/title associated with it. What is it? *taps mic* Testing, 1, 2, Tommy, can ya hear me? That's the (soon to be dethroned champ) Pinball Wizard
