My G string is noticeably louder than the other strings to the point where it’s a bit of an issue
I’m on a strat type electric guitar
I am aware many moons ago of the story that strings used to be much heavier and the G was wound but then a bit of an evolution happened and something like the A D G B E strings moved up a string higher and a new thinner lighter string was added where the original E used to be .
In other words the unwound b string moved to the g string and was obviously tuned to g instead of b
Whether that story is true or not I don’t know but it makes sense
The g feels like there is not enough tension on it.
I have played with wound g strings on electric before with custom gauge sets for more stability and better tuning and it works. But then you can’t bend the g string for all your blues licks. A trade off
ANYWay , to the main point.
I just tried two different (cheap) pickups, one with staggered poles and the other with flat poles and it doesn’t matter , the g string still spikes in volume
It’s been quite a few years since I owned a USA strat so I’m not sure if this problem exists on a better guitar with better pickups
In short , I’m looking for a pickup that is purpose built to deal with this issue

improve finger strength so that bending a wound g string is easier? low tech solution, i know after playing primarily bass for a number of years (and sometimes using vibrato on bass) i can't play anything less than 11s on a fender scale or 12s on a Gibson-scale, so i have wound g strings on some of my guitars

It felt “right” Maybe il consider trying it again. The above article has an interesting point about Hendrix using a .15 on his G instead of a .17 as well as a lighter A and E There is a bit of maths involved , worth a read
