Guys,
I’ve got a client who wants all B slope pots. He also wants CTS pots and is demanding a CTS Linear Push Pull. I don’t think they make that animal. Am I wrong?
I never use B pots - ever. This guy won’t listen. So, what is the consensus on Best Brand B’s? BBB’s... Bourns or Alpha push pulls? Or other?

i don't see cts push pull linear taper
i prefer bourns for everything myself. unless it's stomp box sized and then i use alpha because they're 50 cents apiece

While it's true that audio taper gives a more even change over the complete range of rotation (in most situations), if someone wants finer control from maximum CW to a modest amount of treble cut or volume attenuation, linear could be a better choice for them. Also, in a two-volume configuration, when both pickups are selected and one of the pickups is at maximum volume, rotating the volume pot of the other pickup slightly counter-clockwise from maximum will cause an abrupt drop in that pickup's contribution. This is because of the loading effect of the pickup which is set to maximum. fwiw, Gibson uses 300K linear pots for volume and 500k audio taper pots, in 2v2t configurations.
I can understand why he might want CTS. Their series with PCB connections to the push-pull switches is a great idea. And they use a full-size resistive element. Unfortunately they don't make a push-pull that has a linear resistive element that I'm aware of. Bourns has always been my favorite manufacturer of pots. But do they make push-pulls with linear resistive elements? Alpha has push- push pots as well as the more common push-pulls. And they have both audio taper and linear in both types. They use a smaller resistive element. But in my humble opinion, push-push is a much better strategy than push-pull. Thank you Retread, you always clarify in a manner which is most meaningful. I too, prefer Bourns pots, but will be using the Alpha as suggested. I’ll have to get his buy in on the push-push. Thanks again  |

Take apart both pots, and put the linear element into the push/pull.
Done.

tell him if he can tell you what cts stands for without having to look it up then you'll go through the hassle (on his dime) of Frankensteining a pot
if not then he's just requesting due to name and alpha will suit him just fine

I remember the Chicago Telephone part but for the life of me I can't remember what the S is. Service? Systems? idk. |
