Ok. The storie goes like this: 2 days ago I bought a 1 meg audio taper pot from a local shop. The guys are jerks and I didn't want them to put it on for me. So, I decided to make this a learing experience instead! I've got all the tools. Solder, soldering iron... blah. I simply just don't know how to wire the pot to my guitar. I have looked through diagram after example after tutorial. I'm beginning to think I'm either extremely dense or I just don't know what to look for. So if you could please help me, it would be greatly appreciated.
I have a steinberger with emg pickups. I don't know that it matters or not but I'm simply throwing that out there. If you can, just email me at thiefsieb@charter.net. Thanks in advance!!!

Welcome to GN2. Let's keep replies on the board unless email (or a PM) is all that will work. Then any other members can learn from the discussion, too. "Good on ya" for wanting to make the installation a learning experience. Go for it! Wiring diagrams for EMGs are on the Web, including here: 216.26.190.134/support.asp. It's funny-lookin', but I got there from EMG's home page. Have you already unsoldered and removed the original pot? If not, make a sketch of how it's wired, and that may help get the new one in the same way. If you have any more questions, we'll be here.

yes agreed, and i hope you've got the right soldering iron. firs time i did it i used a Soldering iron designed for PCB Stuff... I didnt realise i had a nice big heavy iron in the garage, it makes things soo much easier when soldering the wires to the shell of the pot, its quite useful to go and file down slightly the shell of the pot so you got fresh metal to solder to :-)
you could try the guitar nuts soldering design but thats too complicated for my lazy and simplistic mind... haha. I didnt have the time to go dig into my father's giant tin bin of various components.
It's good to learn how to fix your own stuff... i do it because i have had lots of bad experiance with people i Pay to fix my guitar and they end up making it worse... and denting it... but back on the subject sorry. anyone else wanna give some advise?

as far as i know steinberger used emg select pickups, the passive ones. so that emg circuits won't work (and a 1 meg pot wouldn't work well with actives anyway)

i'm a little confused on this one anyway, 'Falke.
i mean, if he's just replacing an existing pot, it should be pretty obvious.
just keep track of the wires that came off the old one, and put them on the appropriate lugs on the new one.
but if he's adding a pot, we definitely need more information on what the existing wiring is,
and what he wants the new pot to do.

theifsieb, (emphasis added) First, to the forums! Next, as guitardoode asked, yes, I have some advise I'd like to offer. The quote above is bolded at a certain point. I'd like to remind you that no person on this forum, nor that has ever even soldered two wires together, not one of us was born with the knowledge of how to do any of this! We had to learn from someone else, pure and simple. Some guys may make it look like it was easy to learn, but learn from another person they did. Got that? Good, now, watch this..... not knowing what to look for is not the same as being dense. You will learn it, if only because it crosses your path and catches your interest. All you need to do now is: 1) answer unk's question, are you adding or replacing that 1 Meg pot; 2) make sure you're using the correct sized soldering iron, about 40 watts should be the max. That will heat up the back of a pot for soldering on ground wires, but not be so hot that it instantly melts everything around it; and 3) take advantage of using this forum for interaction. Asking to use email is not quite what I'd call "friendly" to some of the other new guys here. The chances are quite good that at least one of them, but probably more, would also like an answer to that question, ya know. They're probably happy as all get-out that you asked it for them! ;D OK, that's is, I've responded to guitardoode's question, now..... how can we help you? sumgai

unk, Good thread you linked there, unk. Now that we've pretty much demolished this one too, I gotta lament, where is StratLover when you need him? (Last login date: 4/28/05 ) I can see that the Welcoming Committee thing is wearing out its.... welcome, so I'll leave well enough alone. sumgai

unk, Yeah, I should'a looked a bit further and found that "most recent post" thingie. He logged in permanently, and left the cookie on his machine. Obviously the forum software doesn't keep very good track of when a person posts, does it? Maybe we should be thankful that it at least keeps track of what we've read, and what we haven't. (Meaning the icons that tell us we haven't yet read the lastest update to a thread.) sumgai
