Might aswell go for pickups too 🙂
1. Do you have a favourite pickup ?
2. which brands have you tried ?
3. which brands would you like to try but haven’t yet ?
4. if a newbie guitar player said, I got a guitar but want to upgrade these cheap pickups , what would you recommend? I have an unlimited budget

1. Do you have a favourite pickup ?
Not yet , don’t have enough cash to try all the pups I’d like
2. which brands have you tried ?
I’m more sure, I’ve owned a 90’s USA strat and a 70’s USA strat so whatever single coils were in them. Had a custom made warmoth strat with lace sensors. I bought an expensive set of Hendrix? 69 Abigail Ybarra? Single coils , and then sold them as I didn’t like them at all . But I think with a bit more maturity and knowledge I might think that they are great pickups now. Tried loads of friends and students guitars over the years. I played one of the early generation of noiseless pickups from fender and thought they sounded brittle and unpleasant. But then again maybe now I could use them alongside other skills and knowledge I have to produce a good sound . Hmm. I also remember playing more modern strats with noiseless pickups and s1 switching and I thought they sounded terrible at the time . Again perhaps I might think differently now if I tried again.
The best strat ive ever played was one of the Mexican road worn series . I don’t think I’ve ever played a guitar that sounded just like what I think a start should sound like . The pickups probably weren’t anything special either.
3. which brands would you like to try but haven’t yet ?
I’d like to have a single coils shootout with all the top single coil brands and also all the noiseless single coils. Kinman comes to mind for their reputation for low powered magnets in their highly rated noiseless single coils.
4. if a newbie guitar player said, I got a guitar but want to upgrade these cheap pickups , what would you recommend? I have an unlimited budget
If he’s got loads of cash , I’d maybe recommend he buy two or three used sets and keep the favourite set and resell the ones he didn’t like. I’d recommend buying say three sets from varying price ranges so he has the ability to experience and compare and see for himself if expensive pickups really are that much better and worth the extra money .
I’d also maybe send him a handful of YouTube videos of strats with different pickups in them to see if there is a sound he prefers . I’d go for lace sensors , emgs, single coils and noiseless single coils. When it comes to humbuckers I’m clueless, so I would tell him about series wiring mods and the lovely bunch of fellows over at GN2 😉
