To be technical (sorry, occ), what was shown to us in the images was what used to be called 'xss', or cross-site-scripting. It's a matter of "injecting" a link pointing to one site into another site's server-side code... be it HTML, some variant of script code, or even steganography. This takes advantage of the web's desire to not re-publish something as if it were original content, but to instead simply link to a known-good (HAH!) repository of the desired and already-existing content. Sadly, that's being abused to the point where service providers (like ProBoards) have to write additional code to detect and deflect such shenanigans. Sigh. As a famously cynical wood butcher would say "some people's kids".
As to how mobile phones get this, and presumably not desktop machines, the answer would be in the address - simply look for 'mobi' as the sub-domain prefix.
The idea of reporting an ad, be it via an app or a browser, is almost a winner, except for one thing - it's putting some portion of control of content into the hands of another party. I maintain that one should retain
all control of what one's device is displaying - dependence on 'outside forces' is never a sure thing.
Let me go on a tirade here, please.
The reason I despair of civilization ever progressing is simple - mighty few people these days take the time to learn how to use the tools at their disposal. occ, you're a good example - you've been yammering for more than half a year now about how to do this or that with your guitar, yet you don't know the second thing about the most important tool in your life - the Internet. That's being too focused, and the end result is this very thread. Nice that you thought of us to get some help, but seriously? You should've already had this knowledge under your belt, that's what I'm saying.
What I'm referring to isn't arcane stuff like crafting websites or even just a blog page (on something like Wordpress or Blogspot), I'm speaking of the more generic material like "how does a computer get stuff from the internet", things like that. Youtube is full of such videos, though to be fair, many,
many, of them are put up by non-English-as-a-first-language speakers, and they simply can't be understood easily enough to get the point of the presentation. Sad, but fortunately they aren't the sole source of knowledge... one can find lots of other presenters, if one keeps looking.
Youtube isn't the only source, either. Sites like
pcmag.co.uk are big on keeping one abreast of what's happening, how-to-do-it's, and other germane materials. In fact, that last sentence triggered me - try visiting, on a regular basis,
howtogeek.com. They keep it even more simple, and that's always a good thing.
Not to single out occ specifically, he just happens to be the OP of this thread. I really am concerned with the greater percentage of our population who think that the Internet is nothing more than a giant hammer, and all of life's little problems are simply different sized nails. That's why I should be bald by now.*
</tirade> (Thank you for your patience and indulgence.)
And Yogi, that's why I also don't mention Developer tools of any sort - they really are arcane for the average user. The time spent learning how to use them could be better spend watching a pirated movie, in the opinion of most users.
I don't even have a so-called smart phone, so I'm a fine one to talk about how to use them, particularly in this instance of going to some place where you can shut down applications - I'm just repeating what I've read in various snippets, around the 'net.**

* Unless I get a short crew-cut, you can't even see the crown of my head. Why? I dunno. Good genes, perhaps? It's a mystery to me, too.
** Hey, I'm not
that Luddite! I simply adhere to the specification laid down by Alexander Graham Bell. You know, that point in time just over a century ago where he said, "I need to talk to somebody not in this room. I think I'll pickup a telephone and call them, and use my voice to talk to them." Yes, I do proudly use a dumb-phone - I am A.G. Bell compliant.
And no, I am not the local chapter President of the N.A.A.F.H.! Don't even insinuate it!
