Hello fellow nuts,
Last weekend i bought this used 1981 G&L F-100. I think i managed to get it at a fair price, but there are some issues.
The seller is the original owner and had this guitar since 1981, he "upgraded" the pick-ups and changed the wiring. He put in Seymore Duncan Humbuckers and messed the wiring up sump'n fierce. I'd like to restore this cool guitar to it's original wiring with original style pick ups.
I purchased new G&L F-100 pick-ups directly from G&L's website, but they didn't come with any manual for installation. Online I found some diagrams and pictures of the original wiring, and when i compared these old examples to the new pick-ups I see that my new ones have an extra wire and the colors don't match the same configuration as the originals. Mine have a blue wire and the originals don't.
Another problem i noticed after comparing my F-100 with shots of originals is that one of the toggle switches isn't correct. Looks like the bum before me simplified the wiring. As a result the original switch is gone and the one he put in doesn't even do anything despite it being hooked up to wires. I'm pretty mad at the guy because i specifically asked him if he changed the wiring and he said he can't remember exactly what he did or what the switches do (of course), but assured me that all the parts besides the pickups were original. Nope. His memory is worse than he let on. And notice how he did a very poor job of lining up the pole pieces under the strings on the bridge pick-up. Pffff. Not good.
The listing is still up on Reverb.com actually, he hasn't bothered to take it down, so just a warning to others, this seller doesn't know what he's taking about. Good thing is that he doesn't seem to sell a lot of gear. For those curious: here's the listing... reverb.com/item/34734618-g-l-f-100-series-ii-black-1981 And before you laugh at the cost, please know that i got a considerable amount off the price that's advertised since i met him in person and nit picked about the beat up condition and lack of original pick ups. I guess it was a fair deal for $500. The guitar feels very solid, and is super heavy, I like how it's nicely beat up and it's got sort of an industrial look to the design.
Here's mine...
This is exactly how it was when i bought it, I haven't removed the incorrect parts yet as I didn't want to fiddle with anything until you guys saw it.
Here's a diagram I found on a G&L forum...
Here's some photos of originals that i found online...
My new G&L pick-ups...
I hope someone can tell me the proper switch to get to replace the one incorrect switch that the seller installed. And I'm hoping someone here would draw a diagram to show where the wires for these new pick-ups would go to so it's back to the original wiring.
Maybe i should ask the folks on a G&L forum about how to go about this, but i figured I'd run it by you guys first since I think you like seeing stuff like this and you seem to know EVERYTHING about wiring. And i feel most comfortable on this forum due to the great people here.
So that's my jam. Thanks for your time checking out this mess.
