Hey guys,
Just baught an affinity Telecaster to Mod and play around with. Im actuallt pretty satisfied with the bridge pickup in the Tele at the moment, but i also have a set of TexMex, and Texas Specials- (Strat pickups) That I tossed in a couple strats i have. I was considering routing out the New Tele body to hide a mid pickup in there, And had intended on replacing the stock neck pickup in the Tele with ones from the Strat set.
My Thoughts That i am trying to get opinions on is....If i was to add the Strat pickups , My bridge is a little hotter than the mid and neck. Neck and Mid pickups have the same output, and same staggered poles. around 5.4 ohms on the mid and neck and 7 or so on bridge ( strats) I had thought about putting the HOT strat pickup in the neck position, and use the RWRP mid pickup for the middle. barring that the bridge pickup in the tele polarity will allow it.
Youre thoughts on the HOTTER pickup in the neck? Or should i just go with the neck and mid as in the strat?

I've tried it and not been a fan of hotter pickup in neck than middle

I was going to point you in the direction of a custom pickguard, then I saw your edit. I still would go that route, for the $30 you'll spend, you'll save yourself a lot of time and effort rather than trying to make one yourself. I'd figure it as $30 versus 3 hours of my time, and I value my time at a lot more than $10 per hour.
I'm with tragichero on the hotter neck pickup. Bridge pickups are usually made "hotter" because there is less string excursion near the bridge. Maximum string excursion is at the neck position, so I think you're more likely to unbalance things the other way than to hit the "sweet spot".

Hi Txspecial, Since this is a Tele you want to mod, you might try one of the “Strat-O-Tele” wiring diagrams. I believe there are a couple of Strat-O-Tele diagrams on the forum. This one is the most simple.

Understood. Thanks guys.
And Yes i have had my eye on a few diagrams Phostenix had put together.
i figured while i was going to have to refinish the guitar when i was dont i went ahead and carved out a belly curve and cut it down for my arm like a strat. It was my first attempt but thanks to youtube and....TOOLS. Im impressed with myself lol. hopefully the rest of the build will go as smoothly. Hell, i might have ago a reshaping the neck a tad.

that's the biggest thing missing from a tele: belly contour for those of us no longer emaciated 20-something musicians. one reason i dig my "offset tele"

well, I went through all the pickups i had, I found some great neck options, but just couldnt find anything that went well together. But i had an old Ibanez HH Guitar, 24 fret guitar, the neck pickup was always a dud to me, never liked it. BUT i figured why not try a Humbucker in the neck with the single coil bridge. Honestly didnt think it would mix together well. Tone was GREAT but together it overpowered the bridge.
I though a series cap in on the neck and made independant volume controls on the pickups, And surprisingly the cheap ibanez Hum actually compliments the bridge very well. It almost sounds like the treble is rolled of like a .33 cap on 0. But the wierd thing is you still l hear all of them, its almost like a ghost note on the trebles or some of the tones you would hear from B May. Kinda reminds me of the 2nd and 5th guitar solo in Merle haggards "think ill stay here and drink" song
