Adding a "Big Honkin' metal bar" under a Tele pickup?

As I was sifting through dusty boxes in the Basement Archives here at G-Nutz2, while searching old posts to answer frets' question about copper-wrapping coils, I came across a brief exchange (that I now cannot find again, go figure) about the idea that one could make a regular Tele neck pickup sound more "growly" by attaching a big metal bar to the bottom of it. As I recall, ashcatlt was one who was involved in the conversation, the others no longer are around.

Has anyone tried this or heard of someone who has?
